Abstract

A hand held scraper with wear resistant carbide tip 3, particularly for removing materials from the gaps 6 between garden block paving and paving slabs 5. The tip 3 can be replaceable and indexable, replaceable and non-indexable, non replaceable and indexable or non-replacebale and non indexable. An absorbing soft material insert may be placed between the tip 3 and a shaft 2, while the shaft 2 may be telescopic. The tip 3 can be rotatable with the rotational axis being transverse to the axis of a handle (1, fig 1) . The scraper tip 3 can also be a soft material with a wear resistant coating or some other wear resistant material.

Description

I
Hand held scraper with wear resistant tip Removing unwanted materials from the gaps between garden block paving and paving slabs requires the use of a scraping device with a hard wearing tip suitable for relatively small gaps. Due to the abrasive nature of paving materials the tip is exposed to significant abrasion. Typical materials requiring removal include moss, weeds, soil and cement.
Existing scraping devices are manufactured from steel and therefore wear relatively quickly and hence require frequent sharpening.
Alternatively, the removal of weeds from paving gaps may be achieved by the use of liquid based weed killing chemicals. These chemical systems can contaminate the ground soil while posing a potential risk to animals and humans. In addition, the precise application of these liquids requires repetitive bending and kneeling actions from the user.
The present invention is a hand held scraper with a cemented carbide replaceable arid indexable tip with multiple corners. For convenience the scraper handle is of a length to enable the user to stand in a comfortable upright position.
A prior art search revealed a number of hand scrapers having indexable carbide tips. All of these had the rotational axis of the carbide tip substantially in the same axis as the handle. In the current application the rotational axis of the tip is transverse to the handle axis.
Purpose to provide a hard wearing scraping device for the removal of unwanted materials from the gaps between block paving and paving slabs.
Advantages -increased scraper working life -sharpening requirement eliminated -zero ecological damage Figure 1 is a side view of the complete scraper Figure 2 is a magnified view of the tipped end of the scraper during use Figure 3 is a representation showing the position of the user whilst scraping Component List: 1 -plastic comfort grip 2 -aluminium shaft 3 -cemented carbide tip 4 -clamping screw S -paving blocks 6 -material to be scraped Figure 1 shows the complete scraper with plastic comfort grip 1 and the aluminium shaft 2 with the cemented carbide tip 3.
Figure 2 shows the relationship between the cemented carbide tip, clamping screw 4, paving blocks and the material to be scraped 6. The carbide tip provides a sixty degree scraping corner in line with the central axis of the aluminium shaft. The carbide tip is locked into position by use of the dome headed clamping screw which passes through the tip and into a threaded hole within the aluminium shaft.
When the first corner of the tip becomes worn the clamping screw should be loosened and the tip rotated 60 degrees to provide an unused corner at the working position. The clamping screw can then be re-tightened to clamp the tip. When the upper three corners have become worn, the tip is then inverted to provide a further three unused corners. Once all six corners have become worn a replacement tip is fitted.
Figure 3 shows the user in an upright standing position operating the scraper with two hands. The working corner of the carbide tip is positioned within the gap of the paving to be scraped and then pulled smoothly towards the user whilst applying a suitable downward force. The scraped debris is then brushed away and removed.
