Abstract

A tool for the application of a pre-load to a pair of elongate members, such as riser pipes (4, 4a) disposed end-to- end, comprises a tubular spring (2) for receiving the elongate members. The tubular spring (2) is in the form of a lattice (6) over at least a substantial portion of its length. The lattice (6) comprises a multiplicity of right-hand and left-hand helical bands. At each end of the tubular spring is a unidirectional latch (3, 3a) which can grip the respective elongate member for causing movement thereof in the sense in which the tubular spring relaxes from a stretched condition.
