Abstract

A pair of golf holes comprises two tees, two greens and a shared fairway, configured such that the holes are played in substantially opposite directions. Tee shots may be played across the non-target green, or alternatively they may be played from a position that does not interfere with the non-target green. The pair of golf holes may comprise a path adjacent each side of the fairway, each of the two paths connecting a tee with its respective green. A golf course may comprise between two and nine such pairs of golf holes.

Description

I
DESCRIPTION
Title of the Invention
GOLF HOLES AND A CORRESPONDING GOLF COURSE
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a pair of golf holes comprising two tees, two greens and a shared fairway, and a corresponding golf course.
Backciround to the Invention The golf course at Holtye Golf Club in East Sussex, England comprises nine golf holes, each with two different tees, and which therefore can played as an eighteen hole golf course.
Prior to redevelopment, the Quinta do Gramacho golf course in the Algave, Portugal comprised nine golf holes, each with two different greens, and which therefore could also be played as an eighteen hole golf course.
Furthermore, on many golf courses, it is known for a pair of golf holes to cross and in effect have between them two tees, two greens and a shared fairway. One such example is the 1st and 18th holes of the Old Course at Royal Ashdown Golf Club in East Sussex, England.
Summary of the Invention
In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a pair of golf holes comprising two tees, two greens and a shared fairway, all configured whereby the holes are played in substantially opposite directions.
The inventor has realised that such an arrangement has the benefit of providing an eighteen hole golf course experience in an area typical of a nine hole golf course, but where the individuals holes have unique character notwithstanding the shared fairway, for example, facilitating both a left-to-right and a right-to-left shape using the same fairway.
Such a pair of golf holes may further comprises two paths adjacent respective sides of the fairway, each connecting respective tees with respective greens. Such paths enable golfers to keep to opposing sides of the holes when not playing their shots, facilitating simultaneous play in opposite directions. Golfers having to keep to opposing sides of the holes when not playing their shots could be enforced by local rules.
In accordance with a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a golf course comprising between two and nine such pairs of golf holes. Ideally, each such pair of golf holes has two paths adjacent respective sides of the fairway, each connecting respective tees with respective greens, wherein each such path are respective different parts of a single path joining consecutive holes of the golf course.
Brief Description of the Drawings
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying figure which illustrates, schematically, two pairs of golf holes forming part of a golf course, both in accordance with the present invention.
Detailed Description
Referring to the accompanying figure, two pairs of golf holes forming part of a golf course (not shown in its entirety) are illustrated wherein each pair of golf holes comprises two tees, two greens and a shared fairway, all configured whereby the holes are played in substantially opposite directions.
On one pair of holes illustrated, each tee shot is played over and beyond the green which is not in play but which shares the same fairway as the hold being played. On other holes (and especially par three holes), this need not be the case.
Tee shots may be played from a point which does not interfere with the green which is not in play.
Two paths are provided adjacent respective sides of the fairway, each connecting respective tees with respective greens. The paths also connect greens of holes with tees of following holes.
An 18 hole golf course experience can be provided using between two and nine such pairs of golf holes. It is conceivable that consecutive holes may be played on holes sharing the same fairway. Where this is the case, e.g. at the turn, the path would form a loop from one side of the 9th 10th shared fairway to the 9th green, to the 10th tee and then along the other side of the 9th I 10th shared fairway.
Similarly, the concept could be extended to real 18 hole courses, thereby providing a different 18 holes experience when played in the opposite direction.
Other variations of the above would suggest themselves to persons skilled in the art.
