Abstract
A smart miniature circuit breaker (SMCB) can be used to monitor electricity consumption at a circuit level in new and existing domestic consumer units or industrial distribution boards. The SMCB comprises: a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) 2; an instantaneous current measurement device, wireless transceiver 6 and hard wired communication means 7, that can be used in any combination to transmit data and receive acknowledgement and configuration data; and a store to buffer data. The SMCB reads the usage of electricity in the circuit, at a user defined rate, and reports it to a local coordinator 4 which incorporates local data storage, processing capability and means for remote connectivity via an IP gateway such as Wifi, GSM or Ethernet network. The wireless transceiver can operate in a licence free communication spectrum at 433 MHz, 868MHz or 2.4GHz and the circuit current can be measured and communicated at a frequency set by the coordinator unit.
Description
Smart Miniature Circuit Breaker (SMCB) This invention relates to a miniature circuit breaker (MOB) within which has been incorporated a current measuring device, wireless communication and wired communication means, whilst maintaining the standard width and depth of the unit in line with existing single phase MOBs. Measured data from these Smart Miniature Circuit Breakers, hereinafter referred to as SMOB(s), being transmitted to a local coordination unit via a two way communications link, for storage, processing and ongoing communication to other Smart devices, local or networked computers.
Background to the invention
Awareness of energy consumption is on the rise; with the advent of wider smart metering installation changes in legislation and pricing tariffs aimed at reducing consumption in both industrial and domestic sectors are being made.
Current technology enables users to monitor consumption in half hourly slots via smart meters (at the point of supply) or by more instantaneous consumption readings provided by less accurate consumer energy monitors'.
However, both these devices only look at the supply as an overall figure, although additional sensors are available for the energy monitors provided access to the required wiring is available. In order to understand the usage of electricity so as to enable a behavioural change by the user, a more detailed overview of what is being used, where and when would be advantageous.
Also with the advent of smart power management technology appearing in domestic and industrial electrical/electronic devices this information could also be used to communicate to devices on a particular circuit when consumption is high. Thus enabling control of the peak load demands in an intelligent manner by moving smart devices into lower power or standby modes.
Introduction to drawings
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1. Illustrates a number of SMOB5 (1) installed alongside standard miniature circuit breakers (2) inside a standard domestic consumer unit (3).
Outside the consumer unit is the local coordinator unit (4) with power for this unit coming from the standard domestic supply (5).
Summary of the invention
The objective of the present invention is to enable measurement of the consumption of electricity at a circuit level by incorporating additional electronic hardware into a miniature circuit breaker such that it is capable of taking circuit current readings at a set time period, this period being set and communicated to the appropriate SMCB by the local coordinator unit.
This circuit current reading then being transmitted via a wireless link (6) to the local coordinator or to another SMCB (6a) in order to be routed to the co-ordinator; where circumstances will not allow wireless communications (for instance through a metal cased distribution board), the reading can alternatively be transferred via a wired link (7), again either directly to the co-ordinator or via another SMCB.
The electronics to enable this communication both wireless and wired, being incorporated into the SMCB design by extending the unit height (A).
The packaging of these additional components being such that, the width of the SMCB is no greater than the current standard for a MCB being H 8mm (B) and that the protruding switch section (C) remains unchanged from the current standard. By retaining these dimensions enables direct fitment of a SMCB into pre-existing consumer units or distribution boards.
The local coordinator unit can be positioned anywhere provided it has access to mains power controlled by the consumer unit or distribution board to which it is related and where is has either wireless connectivity or wired connectivity to the SMCBs with which it is to communicate and log data.
The local coordinator unit itself housing the wired and wireless communication means (8) to communicate with the SMCBs, data storage and processing means, communication means to enable local or remote connection to an IF network via Wifi, OSM or Ethernet connection (9) -effectively an IF gateway.
As the local coordinator unit is powered from the mains supply it will be able to establish the phase angle of the alternating supply and thus make corresponding correction to the power consumption readings which will greatly increase accuracy on circuits where there are low power inductive loads present.
Connectivity to computers via the IF gateway will enable local or remote connection to the local coordinator unit and via a user interface software application mounted on the connected computer, the user will be able to configure the local coordinator settings e.g. setting the data record time period for each associated SMCB, extract stored data, view & analyse recorded and real-time data from the SMCBs.
Installation of SMCBs will require each SMCB to be paired with the local coordinator unit by either keyed pairing or via the pc interface where individual IDs of SMCBs to be associated can be identified.
Once associated with a local coordinator, communication of individual SMCB5 to the local coordinator will be established via a self configuring network protocol where units can either communicate directly to the local coordinator unit or via a mesh or other network topology where the signal is routed to the local coordinator via other networked SMCBs. This communications protocol applies to both wired and wireless connection of the SMCBs, which can be used in any configuration.
Claims (6)
- Claims 1. A smart miniature circuit breaker device comprising: Conventional miniature circuit breaker designed to protect an electrical circuit from overload or short; Sensor means such that an instantaneous circuit current measurement can be recorded; Transceiver means for transmitting said current measurement data to and receiving acknowledgement and configuration data from a local coordinator unit; Transceiver means such that the transmission of said data can be achieved wirelessly; Transceiver means such that the transmission of said data can be achieved by hard wired means Data storage means such that the transmission of data can be buffered for a period of time should the transceiver means so require.
- 2. A smart miniature circuit breaker according to claim 1 wherein said wireless transceiver means is operable as part of a communication network operating in a licence free area of a communications spectrum.
- 3. A smart miniature circuit breaker according to claims 1 and 2 wherein said area of said spectrum includes at least one of the frequencies 433MHz, 868MHz, 91 5MHz or 2.4GHz.
- 4. A smart miniature circuit breaker according to any of the preceding claims which is capable of measuring the circuit current and communicating this reading at a frequency set and communicated by the local coordinator unit.
- 5. A smart miniature circuit breaker according to any of the preceding claims which is sized such that it can be retro fitted to pre-existing consumer units.
- 6. A smart miniature circuit breaker according to any of the preceding claims which is sized such that it can be retro fitted to pre-existing distribution boards.
