Abstract
A nebuliser dispenser device for a fluid and a fluid delivery system, comprises a perforated plate piezo electric nebuliser member. The nebuliser member is arranged so that it contacts volume of liquid which in use is intended to be dispensed. The fluid delivery system does not comprise a wick.
Description
PRODUCT
This invention relates to a nebuliser dispenser device.
US 4,301,093 and US 5,657,926 show vibrating plate atomiz- ers in which a reservoir is held beneath a piezoelectri-cally driven vibratory atomization plate. A capillary type liquid delivery system, comprising a fabric wick, extends up from within the reservoir to a location under the vi-brating atomization plate to deliver liquid from within the reservoir to the underside of the plate to be atomized thereby.
US 5,518,179 also shows a vibratory type atomizer in which liquid from a fluid source is delivered by a foam capillary material which is lightly compressed against a vibratory perforate membrane. The perforate membrane is shown to be located in a vertical plane; and the foam capillary mate-rial is shown to extend upwardly from the fluid source and to be bent through 90° so that its upper end rests flat against the face of the perforate membrane.
Perforated plate piezo electric nebulisers are prohibi-tively damped when in direct contact with a material used to deliver liquid to the surface of the nebuliser. It has been found that generation of mist or sprays of liquid is greatly improved when the nebuliser is in direct contact with the liquid to be nebulised.
It is an object of the invention to obviate or mitigate the
disadvantages of the prior art.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is pro-vided a nebuliser dispenser device for a fluid and a fluid delivery system, comprising a perforated plate piezo elec-tric nebuliser member, wherein the member is arranged so that it contacts a volume of liquid which in use is in-tended to be dispensed, wherein the fluid delivery system does not comprise a wick.
The dispenser of the invention has been found to be advan- tages in that by eliminating the wick damping of the nebu-liser is vastly reduced. With the reduction in damping the amount of energy available to nebulise the liquid is in- creased. Additionally other problems connected with damp-ing, such as an operation failure is mitigated.
Generally the device comprises a liquid reservoir. The res-ervoir comprises a liquid container for containing a supply of liquid to be atomized. Generally the nebuliser member is arranged such that that a portion thereof is beneath the surface of the liquid to be dispensed. Preferably the nebuliser member is arranged such that it is positioned no more than about 2mm beneath the surface of the liquid to be dispensed.
Usually the nebuliser member comprises planar member, e.g. a rectilinear member.
Generally the nebuliser member is arranged such that the planar member is at an angle of about 45° from the surface of the material to be dispensed (preferably the 45o angle refers to one or both planes of the nebuliser member). In this way it has been found that a further reduction in damping of the nebuliser member is observed. Without wish-ing to be limited by theory it is postulated that where only an (angled) portion of the nebuliser member is in the liquid damping caused by contact of the liquid and the nebuliser member is further reduced.
Preferably the volume of liquid in the reservoir is main-tained in operation of the device, e.g. by a pump.
To enable the continuous nebulising of liquid, the fluid level of the reservoir is preferably maintained. This can be done in several ways including mounting the nebuliser member on a float disposed on or near the surface of the reservoir such that the nebuliser member maintains optimum contact with the liquid. Alternatively and or addition- ally the level of liquid in the reservoir may be main-tained, e.g. by a pump or other re-filling system (e.g. via an air passage that may be opened when the liquid level drops) . The reservoir may be replaceable.
