Abstract

A platform which can be used in the erection of e.g. prefabricated concrete lift shafts, includes a pair of telescopically engaged sliding platform sections 1, 2, opposite ends of which are provided with pairs of projecting locking heads 7 for engagement with apertures C which are preformed in opposite sides of the shaft. The heads 7 may be T-shaped and carried on screw-threaded rods 6 which are provided with turning handles 8. The apertures may be T-section channels. A demountable safety barrier 11 including a handrail (14 fig 2) may be releasably secured to one longitudinal side of the outer platform section 1.

Description

ERECTION PLATFORM FOR USE IN HOLLOW SHAFTS
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates o a pIaform for use in hollow shafts such as prefabricated lift shafts, chimneys and such like.
BACKGROUND
(0 GB 2 363 110 A discloses a lift shaft which is prefabricated in (\J reinforced concrete sections which are stacked one upon another. Each section has four integrally-formed sides. The sections include alternate door sections and shorter spacer sections, the door sections having a recanguIar door aperture formed in one side. The opposed op and bottom faces of the stacked sections are provided with projecting bars and sockets.
The sections are formed by moulding within inner and outer shuttering secured o a vibrating table.
In the consrucion of buildings there is often Iimied access for equipment. Work is often carried ou on the shaft during erection, which necessiaes hiring mobile eIevaing work platforms or the consrucion of temporary scaffolding. This is costly, time consuming, and increases the build cost. In addition, the scaffolding muse be tied in o the shaft W comply with wind loading requirements, which further complicates the consrucion.
The present invenUon seeks o provide a new and inventive way of erecting such shafts during consrucion, which is quick and simple o install and remove, and avoids equipment costs and access problems.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention proposes a platform for use in a hollow (0 shaft, which includes a pair of telescopically engaged sliding platform sections, and opposite ends of the wo sections are each provided with a pair of projecting locking heads for engagement with apertures which are preformed in opposite sides of the shaft.
The locking heads may be T-shaped for insertion into 1-shaped channels in opposite sides of the shaft. They are preferably carried by rods which are screw-threaded for adjusting the distance between each locking head and the respective platform section. The rods may be provided with projecting turning handles.
Preferably a safety barrier is secured o one longitudinal side of the telescopic platform sections. The barrier may be releasably secured o the outer platform section.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The following description and the accompanying drawings referred o therein are included by way of non-limiting example in order o illusrae how the invention may be pu into practice.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of an erection platform in accordance with the invention; (0 Figure 2 is a side view of the platform; and (\J Figure 3 is a vertical section through part of a shaft wall showing how the platform is engaged with the shaft.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The platform o be described may be formed of a lighweigh material such as aluminium. Referring firstly o Fig. 1, the platform includes a pair of telescopically engaged rectangular sliding platform sections 1 and 2, namely a hollow outer section 1 and an inner section 2 which slides telescopically within the other o enable the length of the platform o be adjusted.
Opposite ends 3 and 4 of the wo sliding sections are each provided with a pair of projecting mutually-spaced rods 6 which each carry a T-shaped locking head 7. The rod 6 is screw-threaded into the respective platform section such that the distance by which the locking head 7 projects from the platform section can be continuously adjusted by roaing the rod 6 by means of a radially projecting turning handle 8. The handle 8 projects in the same plane as the T-shaped head 7, the advantage of which will soon become apparent.
When the platform is installed within a rectangular shaft, such as a prefabricated lift shaft, one longitudinal side 9 of the platform is normally positioned close o one wall Wi of the (0 shaft. For safety reasons the opposite longitudinal side 10 of the platform is provided with a demounable barrier 11, best seen in Fig. 2. The barrier 11 comprises three uprights 12, which are bolted or otherwise releasably secured to one side of the outer platform section 1. A mid rail 13 is secured perpendicularly o the uprights, pare way between the section 1 and a handrail 14 secured o the op of the uprights.
The platform is secured o opposite side walls W2 and W3 of the shaft by locating the locking heads 7 into preformed horizontal T-secion fixing channels C which, as shown in Fig. 3, are case into the shaft during manufacture. By sliding the inner section 2 within the outer 1 the distance between the pairs of locking heads 7 can be adjusted to span the width of the shaft. Small individual adjustments to the position of the locking heads can be made by screwing the rods 6 in or ou as required, e.g. to allow for casting tolerances. When the handles 8 are horizontal the heads 7 can be inserted through the mouths of the channels C, but when the handles are rotated o extend vertically, upwards or downwards, the T-shaped heads rotate in the channels to lock the heads in position. It is immediately apparent that the heads are locked by inspecting the position of the handles 8.
In the case of a prefabricated lift shaft formed of stacked i-sections the platform can be fitted to the precast sections on the ground prior to lifting the sections into position. When construction of the shaft is complete the platforms can be (0 removed from the top down while standing on the platform below, rotating the handles 8 to withdraw the heads 7 from the cast channels.
Whilst the above description places emphasis on the areas which are believed to be new and addresses specific problems which have been identified, it is intended that the features disclosed herein may be used in any combination which is capable of providing a new and useful advance in the art.
