Abstract
A calliper gauge for determining three quarters percentage width of tyre about tyre centre line comprises double caliper with measurement markings along one side and spring loaded centre pin. A method of determining three quarters of the width of a tyre about the tyres centre line comprises placing the marked side of the caliper against the tread surface across the fire and adjusting the position of the caliper until an equal amount of markings can be seen between the zero marking and each edge of the tire such that the zero marking on the caliper indicates the centre of the tire. The wider side of the caliper is then used to measure the Width of the tire tread by positioning the A caliper jaws at the edges of the tire. The caliper is then turned round and the sprung centre pin C positioned at the previously determined centre line of the tire. The narrower caliper jaws B then indicate three quarters of width of tyre about tyre centre line. The caliper gauge is used when determining the area of the tire where tire wear should be checked.
Description
DESCRIPTiON
lYRE TREAD WIDTH GAUGE This invention relates to a device for measuring the wear of a motor vehicle tyre.
Conventional methods involve measuring tyre width then calculating three quarters of said width, equi-spaced either side of centre line of tyre as required by law and MOT regulations.
This invention quickly and accurately determines three quarters of tread width to be measured in three simple operations.
This invention will now be described with reference to accompanying:-Fig 1 Shows the gauge determining the tyre centre line by use of increments equi-distant from either side of zero mark on gauge.
Fig 2 shows pointers A' and A' opened to full tyre tread width. Gauge is then reversed and the centre pin C' lined up to predetermine centre of tyre tread.
Fig 3 Shows pointers'B' and B' positioned in contact with lyre against resistance of sprung loaded centre pin to determine three quarters of the lyre tread to be measured to 1.6 tread depth as required by law and MOT regulations.
