Abstract
A printed material for labelling and/or packaging medicines and/or medical instruments comprises a substrate having at least one substance applied thereto by means of a printing process. The substance has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-microbial and/or disinfectant properties. The substance is designed to impart an anti-bacterial, etc. property to the material for an extended period of time and may be encapsulated to provide a delayed release. The substance may be an ink incorporating the antimicrobial, etc. property or it may be a varnish or similar coating. The substance may comprise a marker substance detectable by detecting means to determine the presence of the substance on the material, and the marker substance may be adapted to dissipate over time to indicate that the antibacterial, etc. property has lost its effectiveness. The substance may also be adapted to release an odour. The substance may comprise ionic silver or a chlorine compound.
Description
Printed Material This invention relates to printed material and in particular to printed material having anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-microbial and/or disinfectant properties.
Drugs, medicines and medical instruments are typically packaged in boxes or containers having printed surfaces, printed labels or sleeves providing identification, usage and branding information.
In hospitals and other medical establishments there is great concern regarding the prevention and control of infection. Ensuring high levels of hand hygiene amongst healthcare professionals and visitors attending healthcare facilities is the single most important factor in the prevention and control of healthcare acquired infections.
Typically healthcare professionals must handle a large number of packaged medicines and medical instruments and the handling of such packaging can contribute to the introduction and transmission of bacteria and viral infections within a healthcare environment.
An object of the present invention is to mitigate such risk.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a printed material for labelling and/or packaging medicines and/or medical instruments wherein the printed material comprises a substrate having at least one substance applied thereto by means of a printing process, said substance having anti-bacterial and/or anti-viral and/or anti-microbial and/or disinfectant properties.
Preferably said at least one substance forms at least a portion of the surface of said printed material According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of printing a substrate comprising applying at least one substance to said substrate by means of a printing process, said at least one substance having anti-bacterial and/or anti-viral and/or anti-microbial and/or disinfectant properties.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only.
In one embodiment the printed material may comprise an article of packaging, or a label or sleeve for application to an article of packaging. The article of packaging may be provided with a tamper proof closure adapted to provide an indication that the package has been tampered with or opened to indicate that the package may longer be sterile.
However, it is envisaged that a printed material in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention may be used in other applications where the control and prevention of infection is of concern. The printed material may comprise a printed wrapping for an object, such as a medical instrument.
In one embodiment said at least one substance comprises an ink incorporating or comprising an anti-bacterial and/or anti-viral and/or anti-microbial and/or disinfectant agent.
In an alternative embodiment said at least one substance comprises a varnish or similar surface coating incorporating or comprising an anti-bacterial and/or anti-viral and/or anti-microbial and/or disinfectant agent, said coating being applied to a printed substrate.
The substance may be adapted to provide an anti-bacterial and/or anti-viral and/or disinfectant property to the surface of the printed material for an extended period of time to thereby kill bacteria and/or viruses that may come into contact with the printed material, thus preventing the spread of infection and disease. The substance may be encapsulated, for example in a coating such as a polymeric coating, to provide a slow release of the substance overtime.
Where said printed material comprises an article of packaging, such as a carton or box, said at least one substance may be provided on an outer and/or an inner surface of the article.
Said substance may comprise one or more of a chlorine compound or chloride. The substance may be added to said coating or ink by means of an alcohol carrier. In a preferred embodiment said substance comprises or incorporates silver, in particular ionic silver.
Said printing process may comprise lithographic printing, flexographic printing or gravure printing or any other method of printing.
Said method may further comprise forming said printed material into an article of packaging, such as a carton or box, said at least one substance defining at least a portion of the outer and/or the inner surface of the article of packaging.
One or more further substances may be applied to the substrate, preferably at the same time as said anti-bacterial and/or anti-viral and/or anti-microbial and/or disinfectant substance. One or more of said further substances may comprise an odour emitting substance, which may be encapsulated to emit an odour over time during use of the printed material. One or more of said further substances may comprise a marker substance detectable by a detecting means to determine the presence of said at least one substance on the printed material. Such marker substance may dissipate over time to indicate that said anti-bacterial and/or anti-viral and/or anti-microbial and/or disinfectant substance may have lost its effectiveness after a predetermined time period.
Additionally, or alternatively, said anti-bacterial and/or anti-viral and/or anti-microbial and/or disinfectant substance may be detectable by means of a suitable detecting device to indicate the presence or absence of such anti-bacterial and/or anti-viral and/or anti-microbial and/or disinfectant substance in the printed material. For example, such detecting device may comprise a reader provided in a hospital to detect the presence of the anti-bacterial and/or anti-viral and/or anti-microbial and/or disinfectant substance or of an additional marker substance to verify that a printed wrapper or package is sterile.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment(s) described herein but can be amended or modified without departing from the scope of the present invention.
