Abstract

A vehicle steering column comprising a first part 1 and a second part 2 there being provided an interference fit coupling a portion of the first part within the second part. Prior to assembly; the second part is heated to a higher temperature than that of the first part so as to expand the second part to allow a portion of the first part to be inserted within the second part. The second part is subsequently allowed to cool thereby shrinking; producing the required interference fit with the first part. The first part may be inherently capable of transmitting torque. The first part may be non-circular having a substantially triangular cross sectional profile. The second part may be provided with a multifaceted bore configured to accept the profile of the first part. The first part may be a steering column tube and the second part may be a yoke.

Description

METHOD OF SECURING PARTS OF A VEHICLE STEERING COLUMN
This invention relates to a method of securing parts of a vehicle steering column.
One known method of assembling a steering column tube and a component such as a yoke, for example, is by swaging from round tube so as to provide a torque drive connection at one or both ends of the tube. So, in the case of a pressed yoke, the yoke is fitted to one of the drive connections and the tube is mechanically deformed to generate a robust connection.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of securing a vehicle steering column first part within a second part of the steering column as an interference fit, comprising heating the second part to a temperature higher than that of the first part so as to expand the second part to allow a portion of the first part to be inserted within the second part and then allowing the second part to cool, thereby to shrink and produce the required interference fit with the first part.
The first part may be a vehicle steering column tube. The second part may be a yoke.
The first part (tube) may be so designed as to be inherently capable of transmitting torque. To achieve this, the tube may be non-circular and may have, for example, a substantially triangular profile.
The second part (yoke) may be provided with a multi-faceted internal bore to accept the profile of the tube.
Once the first part has been secured within the second part by shrink fitting, additional mechanical deformation of the first part and/or the second part may be performed to provide a secondary means to ensure a secure connection between the two parts.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a vehicle steering column first part with a portion thereof within a second part of the steering column as an interference fit, the second part having been shrunk-fit on the first part.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig.l shows part of a vehicle steering column tube and a corresponding yoke prior to assembly, and Fig. 2 shows the steering column tube fitted within the yoke.
The first part is an extruded tube 1 of substantially triangular section, albeit with flattened apices whilst a yoke 2 has a multi-faceted internal bore to receive the profile of the tube 1.
The extruded tube 1 is inherently capable of transmitting torque, whilst the yoke 2 has a corresponding torque transmitting connection profile. The connection profiles of both tube and yoke are toleranced to enable the desired degree of interference.
Assembly of the tube/yoke connection is facilitated by heating the yoke 2, thereby expanding the profile before the tube 1 is fitted. After fitting the hot yoke on the tube, the assembly is allowed to cool and the yoke 2 will shrink onto the tube 1 to generate a robust high-strength connection.
The distance A shown in Fig.2 shows the length of engagement of the tube 1 within the yoke 2.
Additional mechanical deformations of the tube and/or yoke may be employed to provide a secondary means of ensuring a secure connection.
As well as providing a drive yoke for slide shafts or tubes of a steering column, it is envisaged that the invention will also be applicable where it is necessary for an inner steering column shaft to pass through the yoke connection.
It also is envisaged that the invention will facilitate automatic manufacturing of vehicle steering columns slider sub-assemblies.

Claims (9)

  1. CLAIMS: 1. A method of securing a vehicle steering column first part within a second part of the steering column as an interference fit, comprising heating the second part to a temperature higher than that of the first part so as to expand the second part to allow a portion of the first part to be inserted within the second part and then allowing the second part to cool, thereby to shrink and produce the required interference fit with the first part.
  2. 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the first part is inherently capable of transmitting torque.
  3. 3. A method according to claim 2, wherein the first part is non-circular.
  4. 4. A method according to claim 3, wherein the first part has a substantially triangular profile.
  5. 5. A method according to claim 2, 3 or 4, wherein the second part may be provided with a multi-faceted internal bore to accept the profile of the first part.
  6. 6. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein, after the first part has been secured within the second part by shrink fitting, additional mechanical deformation of the first part and/or the second part is performed.
  7. 7. A method of securing a vehicle steering column first part within a second part, substantially as herein before described, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
  8. 8. A vehicle steering column first part with a portion therefor within a second part of the steering column as an interference bit, the second part having been shrunk-fit on the first part.
  9. 9. Vehicle steering column first and second parts according to claim 8, wherein the first part is a steering column tube and the second part is a yoke.
