Abstract

A power supply arrangement comprises a power storage device such as battery 10; a generator capable of charging the battery, such as solar panel 24, wind turbine 26 or man-powered bicycle training machine generator 28; and a power consuming device such as television 18 supplied via an inverter 30 and plug 20. A controller such as computer 32 determines whether the power storage device 10 is used to power the consuming device and prevent power being supplied by the battery when the stored power is below a threshold, during a certain period such as when the solar panel is charging it, or when low power, for standby, is required. The controller can also warn when the battery charge is low, allow discharge to start only when charge is sufficient, and only permit one supply to supply power at a time, using switches 14, 16. The controller can monitor the duration or times of supply, the power supplied by the battery 10 and mains 12 and the state of charge. The power supply can be portable, have more than one removable battery, supplying power in turn, and more than one power consumer can be supplied simultaneously, via sockets.

Description

Power Supply The present invention relates to a power supply arrangement and a method of supplying power. The invention is particularly, although not exclusively, applicable to supplying power to domestic appliances.
The present invention is defined in the claims and elsewhere in the specification.
The present invention can be carried into practice in various ways but several embodiments will now be described by way of example and with reference to Figure 1 which is a schematic diagram of a power supply arrangement.
The power supply can be supplied from a power storage device such as a battery 10 or from a mains supply 12. A switch 14 selectively connects or disconnects the power from the battery supply and a switch 16 connects or disconnects the mains supply. The battery may have two or more charging ports such the battery can be charged from more than two power generators.
The power supply arrangement can be used to power any power consuming device such as the television 18 shown in the drawing. The television 18 includes a plug 20 that can be connected to a socket (not shown) on a casing 22 housing the battery. Alternative power consuming devices can be plugged into that socket. Alternatively the housing may include a plurality of sockets such that more than one power consuming device can be powered by the battery or mains supply at any one time.
The battery 10 can be charged from a single generator or from more than one generator and more than one generator may supply power to the battery at the same time. The battery 10 may also be charged from the mains supply 12 by selectively connecting a switch 15. In the arrangement shown the generators comprise a solar panel 24, a wind turbine 26 and an output from a bicycle training machine 28. The battery may be remote from the or each generator such as by being in a separate room or with the battery being indoors and the generator outdoors. The battery can be a lead acid 12V battery such as is used in a car battery or alternatively, a deep cycle type battery such as an absorbed glass mat battery (AGM).
With the switch 16 in a connected position and with the switch 14 in the disconnected position the television 18 is powered from the mains supply 12.
With the switch 16 in the disconnected position and the switch 14 in the connected position the television 18 is powered from the battery with the power from the battery passing through an inventor 30. In an alternative arrangement (not shown) two batteries may be provided each of which is able to receive power from at least one generator and each of which can be used to power the television with such power being controlled by a common switch 14 or with separate switches being used to control which battery supplies power with the possibility of either or both batteries being able to supply power at the same time.
In an alternative a battery such as the battery 10 shown, can be charged and then removed in order to use the power in the battery elsewhere, such as to power a light in a caravan.
In a further alternative the battery 10 may be removably connected to a portable unit. The unit may be able to support a number of batteries. The unit may comprise handles or wheels or a waterproof cover or casing or any combination of these features. The unit or any casing may be illuminated by a reactive paint, or comprise a light to indicate the unit's operation or may include any other visual indication. For instance, the visual indication or paint may be green when the battery is charged above a predetermined level which may be arranged to change to red when there is insufficient charge or when charge is being withdrawn from the battery. The visual indication or paint that changes colour may depend on the battery being charged or the rate of battery charge may be used in which case there may be several different colours that are shown or highlighted for different rates of charge.
The power supply arrangement also includes a computer 32 that is able to monitor the arrangement and/or control the arrangement. The computer may be integral to the power supply arrangement or connected by an interface, such as a USB or wireless connection.
The computer 32 is able to monitor any one or more of the following events: * the duration that the battery and/or mains has been supplying power * the times that the battery and/or mains has been supplying power * the power that has been supplied by the battery and/or mains * the power that has been supplied to the battery * the state of charge of the battery The computer may be able to effect any one or more of the following controls: * giving a warning when the battery charge falls below a predetermined level * preventing power being able to be supplied by the battery, for instance: -when the battery charge is below a predetermined level and/or -during certain periods such as the period when the solar panel is charging the battery and/or -when a power consuming device is on standby which could slowly drain the battery * permitting the commencement of power being supplied from the battery only when the battery is above a predetermined level of charge * operating the switches 14 and 16 to determine which power supply will be used for the consuming device * causing the mains power supply to charge the battery * permitting power to be supplied only from the mains supply or the battery supply at any one time.
Any one or more of the controls may be arranged to be effected automatically.
A visual or audible indication of the state of charge or the amount of charge going onto the battery or both may be given.

Thus, unless expressly stated otherwise, each feature disclosed is one example only of a generic series of equivalent or similar features.
The invention is not restricted to the details of the foregoing embodiment(s). The invention extends to any novel one, or any novel combination, of the features disclosed in this specification (including any accompanying claims, abstract and drawings), or to any novel one, or any novel combination, of the steps of any method or process so disclosed.

Claims (31)

  1. Claims 1. An electric power supply arrangement comprising a power storage supply, a generator arranged, in use, to be capable of supplying power to charge the power storage supply and control means arranged, in use, to determine whether the power storage supply is used to power a power consuming device.
  2. 2. An arrangement as claimed in claim 1 in which the control means comprises preventing power being supplied by the power storage supply when the stored power is below a predetermined level.
  3. 3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2 in which the control means comprises preventing power being supplied by the power storage supply during a predetermined period.
  4. 4. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which the control means comprises preventing power being supplied by the power storage supply when power is being supplied to be stored.
  5. 5. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which the control means comprises preventing power being supplied by the power storage supply when the power required to be supplied by the supply arrangement is below a predetermined level.
  6. 6. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim in which the control means comprises giving a warning when the power in the power storage supply is below a predetermined level.
  7. 7. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim in which the control means comprises permitting the commencement of power being supplied by the storage supply only when the power stored by the storage supply is above a predetermined level.
  8. 8. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim in which the control means comprises permitting the supply of power from only supply at any one time.
  9. 9. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim including monitoring means.
  10. 10. An arrangement as claimed in claim 9 in which the monitoring means is arranged to monitor the duration that the power storage supply has been supplying power.
  11. 11. An arrangement as claimed in claim 10 in which the monitoring means are arranged to monitor the times that the power storage supply has been supplying power.
  12. 12. An arrangement as claimed in any of claims 9 to 11 in which the monitoring means are arranged to monitor the duration that a mains supply has been supplying power.
  13. 13. An arrangement as claimed in claim 12 in which the monitoring means are arranged to monitor the times that the mains has been supplying power.
  14. 14. An arrangement as claimed in any of claims 9 to 13 in which the monitoring means are arranged to monitor the power that has been supplied by the storage supply.
  15. 15. An arrangement as claimed in any of claims 9 to 14 in which the monitoring means are arranged to monitor the power that has been supplied by a mains supply.
  16. 16. An arrangement as claimed in any of claims 9 to 15 in which the monitoring means are arranged to monitor the state of charge of the storage supply.
  17. 17. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim in which the generator comprises a solar power generator.
  18. 18. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim in which the generator comprises a wind power generator.
  19. 19. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim in which the generator comprises a man powered generator.
  20. 20. An arrangement as claimed in any two or more of claims 17 to 19 in which more than one generator is arranged to be capable of supplying power to charge the power storage supply.
  21. 21. An arrangement as claimed in claim 20 in which more than one generator is arranged to be capable of supplying power to the power storage supply at the same time.
  22. 22. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim including at last one further power storage supply arranged to be powered by a generator.
  23. 23. An arrangement as claimed in claim 22 in which at least one power storage supply is arranged to supply power to the power consuming device whilst at least one other power storage supply does not supply power to the power consuming device.
  24. 24. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim arranged, in use, to supply power to more than one power consuming device.
  25. 25. An arrangement as claimed in claim 24 arranged to supply power to more than one power consuming device at the same time.
  26. 26. An electric power supply arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim in combination with a power consuming device.
  27. 27. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim wherein one or more batteries are removably connected to a portable unit.
  28. 28. An arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim including a mains supply and in which the control means are arranged to determine whether power is provided by the mains supply or by the power storage supply..
  29. 29. A method of supplying power comprising generating power to store in a power store supply and using control means to determine whether the power storage supply is used to power a power consuming device.
  30. 30. A method as claimed in claim 29 comprising using power from a mains supply and using control means to determine whether power is supplied from the mains supply or the storage supply to a power consuming device.
  31. 31. A method as claimed in claim 29 or 30 comprising supplying power with an electric power supply arrangement as claimed in any of claims 1 to 28.
