Abstract

A residual current device (RCD) has a timer which counts down the time until the next testing of the device is due. When the countdown reaches zero a light or audible alarm alerts the user. The device may be designed to be mounted on an electrical distribution board or bus bar.

Description

RCD Quarterly/Safety Timer Invention This invention relates to the inspection intervals of RCDs (Residual Current Devices) or such devices; it ensures that the RCD is inspected at the correct interval given in accordance with BS7671 lEE Wiring Regulations.
Statement of invention/description
This invention is a quarterly time out timer that when it counts down to 0 (time out timer) it will make an audio alarm noise this should then alert! remind property! users owners, Maintance engineers etc that the device mechanically needs operating or known as "tripping" and resetting.
The device should supplied direct from the buss bar on the RCD side of the consumer unit/ distribution board with no means of isolation other than the RCD itself as the timing device will reset each time power is lost, this is because for the supply to be cut the RCD must of mechanically tripped. As for this it will only need resetting or mechanically testing on another quartley test.
Test device should be the same size of circuit breakers this is to ease installation and make the device more simpler/quicker to install.
The timer will be of class 11(16th edition BS7671) construction/Double insualted (17th edition BS7671).
A "mains healthy" indicator would indicate the device has power supply and is operating.
After the time out process has comenced, a red indication light will indicate the the RCD requires mechanicaly operating, this is also supported by an intermittent audio warning (this could also be enhanced by a remote warning/audio if the consumer unit/distribution board is located in a place out of sight or hearing.
Reason for an RCD Quartley Timing Device; All RCD, RCCB & RCBOs require mechanically operating quartley in an accordance with BS7671 lEE Wiring Regulations to test their mechanical parts from "sticking". * * * ** *
*.. The device will NOT operate/trip the RCD (or such device) as this may cause nusance tripping it is only to raise awarness of the need to carry : ** out mechanical inspection/operation of RCD (or such device). *** * S... * . * *. * . . S.. S

Claims (5)

  1. Claims 1. An RCD quartley timer is comprising of a timing device (time out timer), that will acknowledge to the operator/user the period that RCDs should be mechanically tested.
  2. 2. RCD (Residual Current Devices) in accordance with BS7671 lEE Wiring Regulations should be mechanically tested quartley to prevent mechanical parts sticking.
  3. 3. Mechanical stuck parts within electrical components can cause increased fire risk
  4. 4. Mechanically stuck parts within electrical component will dramatically increase shock risk to persons & livestock.
  5. 5. Regular testing of RCDs by users which experience indicates is rarely carried out in practice In accordance with BS7671 lEE Wiring Regulations.S * S S S. * S... S * S... * ** * * S *SS S S... * S *SS' * .* * S * S.. S*S.SSSS S
