Abstract

246,537. Griffin, R. H. Sept. 17, 1924. Road-traffic signals on vehicles. - A stopping and turning indicator for road vehicles comprises a hand 5 pivoted to a spindle 23 and adapted to be swung by a handle 15 in a horizontal plane into positions corresponding to the intended directions or raised to signal " stopping." The spindle 23 is connected to the operating shaft 11 by a flexible shaft 9, the parts being located in a tubular container 16 which has at its upper and a rotatable cap 1 carrying an electric lamp 6 and a reflector. The lamp terminal co-operates with separate contacts or a contact ring mounted on a washer 19, to illuminate the hand in its signalling positions. The hand has a wedgeshaped extension 2 which co-operates with diametrically-opposed slots in the cap 1. When the handle 15 is rotated, the hand is swung in the horizontal plane and the extension 2 rotates the cap 1 and lamp 6. When the handle is pulled, an inclined surface 3 on the cap 1 raises the hand into a vertical position. The hand is lowered by the action of the extension 2 on one of the slots in the cap upon retraction of the handle 15. The apparatus is mounted on the side 18 of the vehicle by a boss 12 having a tapered hole through which passes the casing 16. The boss has set-screws whidh hold the casing 16 in position and allow for adjustment of the amount or angle of projection of the apparatus from the side of the vehicle.
