Description

A Seal
Field of the Invention
The invention relates to seals, more particularly to seals for door frames, and to door frame assemblies comprising the seal of the invention.
Background of the Invention
Door seals are fitted for a number of purposes. For example, they may function as acoustic seals, fire seals or weather seals. Such seals are typically attached to a door frame and come into contact with the door when in a closed position.
Smoke and fire seals for door frames are known from GB2356885. This patent describes a seal to be fitted to the corner of a door frame comprising two inwardly extending arms with which the door engages when closed, an example is illustrated in Figure 1. This type of seal can be difficult to retro fit to a door frame without removing and re-fitting the door or re-siting the hinges since a fair degree of clearance is required behind the door to allow for installation and general use of the door.
Further, the hinged side of the door is also liable to catch on one of the arms on opening or closing the door.
It would be desirable to provide an improved seal.
Summary of the Invention
One aspect of the invention provides a seal for installation in a door frame comprising: an elongate base member, the base member comprising a first longitudinal edge, a second longitudinal edge, a top surface and a bottom surface; a first substantially flexible elongate sealing element extending from the first longitudinal edge of the base member, the first substantially flexible elongate sealing element having a tapered cross-section; and at least one additional substantially flexible elongate sealing element; wherein the angle formed between the first flexible sealing element and the top surface of the base member is greater than 900.
I
A-
Preferably the angle formed between the first flexible sealing element and the top surface of the base member is between 95° and 1000.
Preferably one of the at least one additional sealing elements extends from the base member towards the first flexible sealing element.
Favourably, the at least one additional sealing element extends from the top surface of the base member.
In one embodiment of the invention the seal comprises a first and a second additional sealing element, each extending transversely from the base member towards the first flexible sealing element.
In another embodiment of the invention the at least one additional sealing element extends substantially vertically from the base member of the seal. In this embodiment of the invention the seal favourably comprises a first and a second additional sealing element, each extending substantially vertically from the base member of the seal.
Preferably the base member is fabricated from a rigid material, for example rigid PVC.
Preferably each sealing element is fabricated from a flexible, hard-wearing material. Advantageously, each sealing element is fabricated from a material with a deflection recovery value of at least 4O%.
An example of a suitable material is a PVC/nitrile butadiene rubber compound.
To ease installation of the seal, the bottom surface of the base member may be provided with an adhesive. Alternatively, adhesive may be applied to the bottom surface of the base member prior to installation.
A further aspect of the invention provides a door frame assembly comprising a door, a door frame and a seal as hereinbefore defined, the seal being disposed between the frame and the door, wherein when the door is in a closed position the door rests on the at least one additional substantially flexible sealing element.
The invention provides an improved seal for installation in a door frame which may be easily retro-fitted without the need to remove or re-hang the door to the frame.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments
Figure 1 illustrates a prior art door seal 30 installed in a door frame. The seal comprises two flexible sealing elements 31 and 32, attached to rigid base members 33 and 34 arranged at 900 to each other.
In order to install the seal 30 on the side of the door frame where the hinges are located the door must usually first be removed to allow the seal to be physically introduced and secured into the recess. Depending on the specific dimensions of the door and frame, the door hinges may also need to be re-sited when installing the seal. Also, when the door is opened in the direction indicated by the arrow, the door is liable to catch on sealing element 32.
With reference to Figures 2 and 3, there is shown a seal 1 according to a first aspect of the invention comprising a substantially rigid elongate base member 2 with a flexible elongate sealing element 3 extending from one elongate edge. Attached to the top face of the base member 2 are two substantially flexible sealing elements 4 and 5. Tn this embodiment of the invention the two sealing elements 4 and 5 both extend transversely across the top surface of the base member 2 towards the flexible elongate sealing element 3. When a door is closed onto sealing elements 4 and 5, air gaps 6 and 7 are formed between the sealing elements 4, 5 and base member 2. These air gaps act as acoustic insulation. Building Regulations (BS 476) require a gap of at least 2mm between the door and the frame. The thickness of the base member 2 is typically less than 1mm, therefore the flexible sealing elements 4 and 5 do not come into contact with the base member 2 when the door is closed and the air gaps 6 and 7 are maintained. Preferably the base member 2 is fabricated from a rigid material such as PVC. Preferably the sealing elements 3, 4 and 5 are fabricated from a material with a deflection recovery value of at least 40% (tested according to BS EN 12365-3:2003). A deflection recovery value is a measure of how well the material returns to its original shape after compression; the greater the value, the greater the flexibiJity of the material. Preferably the sealing elements 3, 4 and 5 are fabricated from a PVC/nitrile butadiene rubber compound. Preferably the base member 2, flexible sealing element 3 and sealing elements 4 and 5 are co-extruded.
As shown in Figure 2, the flexible elongate sealing element 3 has a tapered cross-section. The cross-section is tapered such that the cross-sectional width of the sealing element decreases with increasing distance from the base member 2. As shown in Figure 3, the angle, 0, formed between the flexible sealing element 3 and the top surface of base member 2 must be greater than 90°. Preferably the angle 0 is between 95 and 100°. As the angle 0 is greater than 90° the flexible sealing element 3 projects towards the frame and away from the door, and hence the flexible sealing element 3 does not rely on securing means to keep it in place against the door frame. This projection of the flexible sealing element 3 away from the door also helps to prevent the door catching on the flexible sealing element 3 when the door is opened and closed.
The flexible nature of the sealing element 3 combined with the tapered cross-section enables the seal to be installed in a door frame without removal of the door prior to installation. This is a great advantage since re-hanging a door requires substantial additional effort.
With reference to Figure 4, when installed into a recess 8 in a door frame 7 the seal 1 is secured to the frame via the underside of the base member 2. The base member 2 may be secured to the frame by any conventional means, including by means of adhesive applied to the seal or frame or by means of a pressure-adhesive already provided on the underside of the base member 2. The seal 1 is only secured to the frame 7 via the base member 2. The flexible elongate sealing element 3 is not secured to the frame and is not required to make contact with the frame. When the door is closed air gaps 9 and 10 are formed between the door 6 and the frame 7.
Figures 6 and 7 illustrate an alternative embodiment of the invention. Like reference numerals are used to refer to like features. In this embodiment the seal 11 comprises one sealing element 12 which extends transversely across the top surface of the base member 2 towards the flexible sealing element 3, defining an air gap 13 between the sealing element 12 and the base member 2. When a door is closed onto the sealing element 12, an air gap 13 is formed between the sealing element 12 and the base member 2. The air gap 13 acts as acoustic insulation. Preferably the base member 2 is fabricated from PVC. Preferably the sealing elements 3 and 12 are fabricated from a material with a deflection recovery value of at least 40% (tested according to BS EN 12365-3:2003). Preferably the sealing elements 3, and 12 are fabricated from a PVC/nitrile butadiene rubber compound Preferably the base member 2, flexible sealing element 3 and sealing element 12 are co-extruded.
As shown in Figure 7, the flexible elongate sealing element 3 has a tapered cross-section. The cross-section is tapered such that the cross-sectional width of the sealing element decreases with increasing distance from the base member 2. The angle, 0, formed between the flexible sealing element 3 and the top surface of base member 2 must be greater than 900. Preferably the angle 0 is between 95 and 1000.
Figures 8 and 9 illustrate a further embodiment of the invention. Like reference numerals are used to refer to like features. In this embodiment the seal 21 comprises two substantially flexible sealing elements 22 and 23 which extend substantially vertically from the base member 2. When a door is closed onto sealing elements 22 and 23, air gaps 24 and 25 are formed between the door and base member 2. These air gaps act as acoustic insulation. Preferably the base member 2 is fabricated from PVC. Preferably the sealing elements 3, 22 and 23 are fabricated from a material with a deflection recovery value of at least 40% (tested according to BS EN 12365-3:2003). Preferably the sealing elements 3, 22 and 23 are fabricated from a PVC/nitrile butadiene rubber compound.
Preferably the base member 2, flexible sealing element 3 and sealing elements 22 and 23 are co-extruded.
As shown in Figure 8, the flexible elongate sealing element 3 has a tapered cross-section. The cross-section is tapered such that the cross-sectional width of the sealing element decreases with increasing distance from the base member 2. The angle, 0, formed between the flexible sealing element 3 and the top surface of base member 2 must be greater than 90°. Preferably the angle 0 is between 95 and 1000.
With reference to Figure 9, when installed into a recess 8 in a door frame 7 the seal 1 is secured to the frame via the underside of the base member 2. When the door is closed the door rests on sealing elements 22 and 23, maintaining air gaps 24 and 25 between the door 6 and the frame 7.
The invention provides an improved seal which may easily be retro-fitted to a frame without the need for re-hanging the door or re-siting door hinges. The seal also leads to improved operation of the door since the door is far less likely to catch on the seal on opening and closing.
