Abstract

A method for the purification of glycerol (obtained during bio-diesel production) comprises the following steps:1) Delivering a transesterification by-product obtained from a bio-diesel fuel processing process to a blending tank (101);2) Guiding clean water to the blending tank;3) Guiding phosphoric acid to a homogenizer (104);4) Delivering the blended byproduct to the homogenizer; 5) Delivering the homogenized mixture to a feedstock tank (201) and subsequently to a three phase stack disc separator (202);6) Separating the mixture into: (a) Free fatty acid; (b) Crushed crystalloid potassium phosphoric acid; (c) glycerol / water / methanol. Component (a) may be used as an animal feed additive; (b) may be used for making fertilizer; (c) may be refined into medical grade glycerol. A thin film evaporator unit may be used for methanol recycling.
