Abstract

An impermeable barrier boom with a buoyant member is used in a method of establishing a height difference between two bodies of liquid, The buoyant member is attached to an impermeable membrane which is in turn connected to the floor of a body of liquid by a seal and a tether, thus separating two bodies of liquid with differing levels. The buoyancy of the buoyant member restrains the higher liquid level, while the tether counteracts the lateral forces on the barrier. The seal and tether may be a lower boom filled with ballast, such as sand, thus providing both the tether and seal.

Description

Novel barrier to maintain differing levels of 1iuid within a body of water.
Description
The inventions comprises of 4 elements 1. A buoyant boom 2. An impermeable membrane 3. A tether 4. A seal The tether and seal can be provided as a tether boom', where a lower boom is filled with ballast that provides both the tether for the buoyant boom and the seal see figures 1 and 2 below
Examples:-
A hollow boom bonded to a plastic membrane. The membrane in turn is bonded to another boom filled with ballast. The weight and friction of the ballast boom acts as both a tether and seal to the floor.
Two buoyant booms are attached be a membrane. The membrane is held down to the floor by placing ballast on the membrane.
The invention can be used for coastal protection, where it can be used to reduce tide height and range to protect from flooding and or erosion.he invention could be deployed in front of existing defences to raise the height of protection. e.g. The Thames barrier.
