Abstract
An exhaust fumes capture device that is fitted to the end of an exhaust pipe A comprising a metal housing C that is filled with capture material, where the capture material is held within the device by wire mesh at the exit and entrance points. Preferably the capture material is a biodegradable material, such as heat resistant wool, cotton or Reba bark derivative. There may be metal channelling walls inside the housing to direct the exhaust fumes and a clipped-hinge device within the upper perimeter wall to allow replacement of the capture material. There may also be a brace B attached to the exhaust with an adjustable clip E1, E2 to suspend the housing along the arm of the brace and away from the end of the exhaust pipe.
Description
A device, preferably lightweight metal, attached to the visible end of a vehicle's exhaust pipe to assist in the partial capture of exhaust pipe fumes once they have left the exhaust pipe. Rather than chemically or electronically filter emissions, sequestrate or trap them in their entirety, the device is designed simply to reduce emissions flowing directly into the atmosphere once they have left the exhaust pipe.
Claims (2)
- Claims: A solid, possibly metal-framed, readily detachable exhaust fumes partial-capture device (Figs.1 & 2) for housing any, preferably biodegradable, material (fig
- 2.H) capable of daily disposal and replacement, such as heat resistant wool, cotton, potentially a Reba bark derivative, or any material as yet un-devised for the purpose, that is capable of capturing as much of a vehicle's exhaust fumes as the material will allow within the constraints of the housing device. The flow of fumes into and out of the device is to some extent unimpeded by the wire mesh entrance and exit points (fig.2 G), which are designed to let air flow through while still holding the materials within the housing (fig.1.C). The speed of travel of fumes and their direction are both channeled by metal walls (fig.2 F) deflecting and reducing airflow to assist in the capture process, with the act of travelling through the capture device requiring the fumes to pass over and through the fibres of the material (fig.2 H), to which particles of the fumes will adhere and/or by which process particles of the fumes will be absorbed, thereby limiting the overall emissions directly into the atmosphere. Daily removal and disposal of the absorbent material is effected by means of a clipped-hinge device (fig.2 i) within the upper perimeter wall that snaps open (fig2. J) and can be securely refastened once the material has been replaced. While the brace of the device (fig.1 B) is attached to the vehicle to secure the housing by means of an adjustable clip (fig1.E1&E2) fastened directly onto the exhaust pipe, the housing itself (fig.1. C) is suspended along the arm of the brace (fig.1 B) at a distance from the end of the exhaust pipe, allowing natural airflow (fig .1 D) between the exhaust pipe (fig.1 A) and the housing and relying on the variable force of the expelled fumes to drive the fumes into and through the capture device.
