Abstract

A pocket on the sleeve of a coat to house a glove or mitten 5, the glove or mitten 5 is stored in the pocket 1 when not in use. Preferably the gloves or mittens are attached to an elastic or alternative material cord 3 that may be detachably attached to the inside of the pocket and glove or mitten via a releasable fastener such as a button or plastic clip 2, 4, allowing the gloves or mittens to be removed from the pocket and worn without the risk of losing them. The pocket may be closed by a releasable fastener such as hook and loop, poppers or zip 6.

Description

Intellectual Property Office mm For Creetity and Innovation Application No. GB0806362.O RTM Date:27 June 2008 The following terms are registered trademarks and should be read as such wherever they occur in this document: Velcro UK Intellectual Property Office is an operating name of The Patent Office Title: A glove or mitten pocket attached to a coat sleeve
Background:
This invention provides a solution to the problem of losing gloves or mittens. As a mother of three young children, I am constantly losing children's gloves/mittens. This is both expensive and inconvenient. Lots of other mothers I know are frustrated by this problem and at present, mothers are only faced with two alternatives to prevent children from losing gloves or mittens.
1) For children to have a long piece of elastic sewn onto each glove. The elastic is then threaded through the arms of the child's coat. The elastic can prove a strangling hazard, it is not liked by schools because of this and the gloves are unsightly as they hang down from the sleeves of the coat. Whilst hanging down from the sleeves of the coat, they can get caught on things easily e.g. car doors, car seats, play equipment etc. In addition, the elastic will often stretch as it regularly catches on things.
2) For gloves to be attached by mitten/glove clips to the cuffs of a coat sleeve. This also leaves the gloves hanging down which mean that they are unsightly and can catch on things easily e.g. car doors, car seats, play equipment etc. This can also cause damage to the gloves.
Statement of invention:
To provide a far more effective solution to the expensive and inconvenient problem of losing several pairs of children's gloves every winter. The proposal is to provide a pocket on a children's coat sleeve in which to house the gloves/mittens when they are not in use. The pocket will be positioned on either the underside of the coat sleeve or on the topside of the coat sleeve. Each glove/mitten will be attached by a strong elastic to the inside of the pocket and therefore when the child needs to use the glove/mitten, he/she simply takes it out of the sleeve pocket and puts his/her hand into it.
The glove/mitten is at all times attached to the inside of the pocket so that it is impossible to lose the glove. It is not a strangling hazard and will not get caught on things when not in use, as the child puts the gloves/mittens back into the sleeve pockets when he/she does not need them. With the gloves stored neatly away, the child is free to play without the gloves hanging down and getting in the child's way. This invention provides a solution to this common problem which is cheap to manufacture, simple but effective..
Introduction to drawings:
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows a coat sleeve with the pocket for holding the glove/mitten sewn onto the sleeve. The pocket can be sewn either onto the underside of the coat sleeve or onto the topside of the coat sleeve, depending on preference.
Figure 2 shows the glove/mitten pocket in more detail. Please note that in this drawing the glove/mitten is in an open position.
Figure 3 shows how the glove/mitten should lie inside the pocket. This drawing assumes that the pocket is see-through which in reality it is unlikely to be.
In figure 1, a lightweight glove/mitten pocket is sewn onto the underside or topside of a coat sleeve.
The pocket should be sufficiently large to comfortably house the glove/mitten and elastic. It should be the correct shape for the glove/mitten to be placed inside easily by a child or adult. The two drawings of the sleeve show firstly the pocket sewn onto the underside of the coat sleeve and secondly the pocket sewn onto the topside of the coat sleeve.
In figure 2, the glove/mitten pocket in shown in an open position. In reality the pocket will not open this far as it will be stitched at three of the four sides and only open on the side where the fastenings 6 are placed. However, it is necessary to show the pocket in this position in order to fully understand how it will function. The glove/mitten is attached to the inside of the pocket at 2. 2 is shown here as a button sewn onto the inside of the pocket. 2 may also be a plastic clip or other fastening device so that the strong elastic 3 can be removed and washed if necessary. 3 is a piece of strong, hard-wearing, washable elastic that is the correct length for a child to easily place his/her hand into the glove/mitten when the elastic is hanging down. 4 shows a button sewn onto the inside of the glove/mitten that attaches the elastic to the glove/mitten. 4 could also be a plastic clip or other appropriate fastening device. 4 allows the glove/mitten to be removed from the elastic so that it can be washed when necessary. 5 shows a glove made of a water-resistant, washable material which has the ability to lie flat in the pocket. 5 could also be a mitten for younger children which is also made of a water-resistant, washable material. 6 shows the fastenings for the pocket. This drawing shows four pieces of Velcro that hold the pocket shut when necessary. 6 could also be poppers to keep the pocket closed or.alternatively a zip could run the length of the topside where the fastenings are shown at 6.
In figure 3, the glove/mitten is shown in the position it will be in when housed in the pocket. As explained above, this is shown as if the pocket were see-through which in reality it is unlikely to be.
The glove/mitten lies flat in the pocket and the gloves/mittens are kept out of the way and they are also very unlikely to be lost.

Claims (4)
