Abstract

A device for setting the thickness of cement or mortar between courses of brick or blockwork comprises a pair of L shaped adjustable brackets 1, 1A which may be clamped in position onto a spirit level via the use of a threaded rod 3 and a wingnut. A movable gauging rod 2 passes through said brackets and may be moved with respect to said brackets. A thumbscrew is used to hold said gauging rod in position. The gauging rod has a projection at one end to align with a lower course of bricks to ensure that a consistent thickness of mortar is used.

Description

The invention is called a Mortar Joint Gauging tool (MJG) The MJG is clamped to a spirit level and will aid the user To form a constant mortar joint between courses of bricks Blocks &stone Ed.
The MJG consists of two clamps these can be produced in Metal. Wood. Plastic or can be injection molded.
Clamp (Ia) has a fixed threaded rod again in any of the above Materials there is also a hole drilled all the way through.
Clamp (1) has two holes drilled all the way through.
There is a bar called the gauging rod (2) which can be of any of the Above materials.
A wing nut (4) and a thumb screw (5).
The gauging rod passes through both clamps (I) & (Ia) The threaded rod (3) is secured in clamp (Ia) and slides through Clamp (1) and is secured to the spirit level by the wing nut (4) The gauging rod (2) passes through both clamps and is secured by Thumb screw (5) The MJG works like this you take a brick for instance 65mm allow For a 10mm mortar joint = 75mm measure from the inside of clamp (Ia)to the bottom of the gauging rod 75mm and tighten the thumb screw Fit the MJG to the spirit level and tighten in place with the wing nut.
When the gauging rod is placed on the base or the brick below and the Spirit level is placed over the brick and mortar tap down the brick to Show level then you have a 10mm mortar joint just repeat this process To your required height.
The gauging rod can be attached to a spirit level in several ways and is the Main feature of this invention.
