Abstract

Clutches, friction; shaft couplings.-In slipping couplings of the kind in which centrifugal blocks carried by the driven shaft are spring-pressed into engagement with a driving-drum, the blocks are radially guided, so that the maximum torque transmissible to the driven member at any speed thereof is dependent solely on the spring load and centrifugal force acting on the blocks. A hub 2, Fig. 1, on the driven shaft carries friction blocks 3 pressed radially by their own elasticity or by springs 4 into contact with a driving-drum 1, the pressure being augmented, when the driven shaft rotates, by centrifugal force produced by the blocks 3 or by separate masses (not shown). The driven member may carry a flywheel which, during overload, delivers energy to the driven parts. The springs may act between the blocks 3 and hub 2. For use with internal-combustion engines, single-phase electromotors, and other motors having a low starting effort, the clutch described, shown at 6, Fig. 3, may be combined with an ordinary centrifugal clutch 5 carried by a driving-member 9.
