Abstract
A tiling guide comprising a plurality of guide sections, (3,4,5) at least some sections having a male connector region and one extremity or end and a female connector region at the other extremity or end. Two guide sections are joined by the connectors such that the male and female regions interlock. Some of the guide sections may be elongate with a male connector region at one end and a female connector region at the other. At least one guide may be substantially T-shaped with female connectors regions at its extremities. The male connector region may be in the form of a dovetailed projection and the female connector region in the form of a dovetail recess. Also disclosed are the inclusion of adjustment slots through which screws attach the guide to a wall and a spirit level.

A TILING GUIDE
The present invention relates to a tiling guide particularly for enabling walls to be tiled accurately by a homeowner or handyman.
The walls of most buildings are not perfectly square in that the upper and lower edges are not horizontal and the side edges are not vertical Walls are generally tiled from the bottom upwards and if, for example, the top edge of the skirting board is used as a datum line, it is possible that the lowest row of tiles and, therefore, each subsequent row, will not be horizontal. Not only will this look bad but will coarse problems when riling the adjacent walls, In order to help overcome this problem there is provided according to the present invention a tiling guide comprising a plurality of guide sections, at least some of which have at an extremity thereof a male region and at another extremity thereof a female region, the regions being such that in use the male region of one section can interlock with the female region of another section.
At least some of the guide sections may be elongate and have a male region at one end and a female region at the opposite end.
At least one of the guide section may be substantially T-shaped having a female region at each end of the cross limb a female region at the end of the other limb.
The male region may comprise a dove-tail shaped projection and the female region may comprise a dovetail recess.
Each section may comprise at least one slot to enable the position of the section to be adjusted.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example and with refereence to accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a wall of a building to which is attached an embodiment of a tile guide according to the present invention. 1 0
Figure 2 shows a detailed view of an elongate guide section of the tile guide illustrated in figure 1, and Figure 3 shows a detailed view of a T-shaped guide section of the tile guide illustrated in figure 1.
Referring to figure 1, there is shown a wall I of an ihternal room of a building. Attached to the wall is a tile guide, generally referred to by numeral 2, comprising a plurality of guide sections 3,4. The sections 3 each comprise an elongate strip which extend horizontally along a lower region of the wall 1 and the sections 4 are elongate strips which extend vertically up a side region of the wall 1.
The horizontal and vertical sections 3,4 are connected together by a T-shaped section 5 located at the lower left hand region of the wall 1. As can be seen from figure 1, the tile guide enables a lower row of tiles 6 to be affixed to the wall 1 so that they are aligned exactly horizontally with each other in a continuous horizontal line that extends to the length required by the user. Once the lowest row of horizontal tiles 6 has been * 3 permanently fixed to the wall, the tile guide can be removed.
Alternatively, if the tiling project is a major one and entire walls are to be covered the vertical tile guide sections 4 can be kept in place until the entire wall space within the horizontal and vertical sections 3,4 has been covered with tiles 6. if this should be required the horizontal sections can be perpendicularly locked to the vertical sections by the T-shaped section to form a perfect right angle to enable a correction for abutting walls which are not square.
Although not shown in figure 1 the tile guide may incorporate on some guide sections a minature spirit level so that the horiziontal and vertical lines required may be more easily and speedily obtained without need for additional tools Figure 2 shows a detailed view of guide section 3 in the form of an elongate strip having at one end a dovetail shaped projection 7 and at the opposite end a dovetail shaped recess 8. The guide section 3 is also provided with slots 9 for adjusting its position on the wall 1. Although the size of the section is not critical it may advantageously have a length of approximately 600mm, a width of approximately 60mm and a thickness of approximately 8mm.
The T shaped guide section 5, shown in figure 3, has a dovetail shaped recess 10 at the extremity of each limb. It is also provided with adjustment slots 11. Advantageously, the elongate limb of the T-shaped guide section 5 is similar to that of each section 3,4.
In use of the embodiment shown in figures 1 to 3, the T-shaped guide section 5 is situated near the left hand corner of the wall 1 and vertical and horizontal lengths are built up by locating the dovetail projection of one elongate section in a dovetail recess of the T-shaped guide section 5 and thereafter progressively locating a dovetail projection of each elongate guide section 3,4 in the recess of an adjacent elongate guide section 3,4.
Each guide section is temporarily fixed to the wall 1 by means of screws (not shown) passing through the adjustment slots. When a desired number of rows and columns of tiles 6 has been fixed to the wall I the tile guide can be removed in sectons by by removing the screws. Thereafter the small spaces left around the edges of the wall 1 can be tiled by tile pieces of the appropriate size.
Claims (5)
