A second drive axis 40 may be arranged to rotate at the first speed and in the opposite direction to the first drive axis 30, a second vane 42 being arranged to rotate about a second vane axis 43 at half the speed of the second drive axis 40 and in the opposite direction, and second orbiting means allowing the second vane axis 43 to orbit the second drive axis 40. The rotation of the vanes 32, 42 may be out of phase to prevent them touching each other.
Description
I
Title: Prime Mover The present invention relates to a prime mover, and especially to a prime mover which can deliver an airflow or be powered by an airflow.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a prime mover comprising: a) a first drive axis adapted to rotate at a first speed in a first direction b) a first vane connected to rotate about a first vane axis at half the speed of the first drive axis and in an opposite direction to the first drive axis, said vane axis being parallel to the first drive axis and c) first orbiting means allowing the vane axis to orbit the first drive axis, in use either said first drive axis being driven and said vane delivering an air flow or air flowing over the vane and said vane driving the first axis.
Preferably the prime mover further comprises: a) a second drive axis adapted to rotate at said first speed in a direction opposite to the first drive axis b) a second vane connected to rotate about a second vane axis at half the speed of the second drive axis and in an opposite direction to the second drive axis, said vane axis being parallel to the second drive axis and c) second orbiting means allowing the second vane axis to orbit the second drive axis, in use either said first and second drive axis being driven and said first and second vanes delivering an air flow, or air flowing over the first and second vanes and said first and second vanes driving the first and second axis.
Preferably the edge of the first vane passes adjacent the second drive axis as the first vane axis orbits the first drive axis, and the edge of the second vane passes adjacent the first drive axis as the second vane axis orbits the second drive axis.
Preferably the vanes are substantially planar. The vanes may be symmetrical and the axis of symmetiy is also the vane axis.
Preferably the width of a vane is substantially twice the width of the diameter of orbits provided by the first and second orbiting means.
Preferably the movement of the vane are out of phase with each other to prevent the vanes touching each other.
In one embodiment the first and/or second drive axis each form the rotational axis of a wheel, and the first and/or second vane axis is each adjacent the perimeter of one wheel, the or each wheel forming the orbiting means. Two wheels may be engaged toothed wheels whereby rotation of one wheel contra rotates the other wheel.
In one embodiment the first and/or second drive axis form the rotational axis of a radially extending arm having one end connected to the drive axis, and the first and/or second vane axis is each adjacent the other free end of one arm, the or each arm forming the orbiting means. Two amis may be connected whereby rotation of one arm contra rotates the other arm.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a prime mover with first and second drive axis and first and second vanes, and Figure 2A to 2H shows schematic movement of the vanes.
Referring to Figure 1 there is shown a prime mover 1.
Prime mover 1 has a rectangular frame 2 supporting a first drive axis 30 and a second drive axis 40.
Mounted for rotation about first drive axis 30 in frame 2 are a pair of spaced toothed wheels 31 A,31B which rotate in a clockwise directions. Mounted for rotation about second drive axis 40 in frame 2 are a pair of spaced toothed wheels 41A41B which contra rotate in an anti clockwise directions. The teeth of wheels 31 A,3 I B mesh with the teeth in wheels 41 A.,4 I B respectively and rotate at a first speed.
A first vane 32 is connected at opposing ends to the perimeter of wheels 31A,31B where the vanes are supported to rotate about a first vane axis 33. Vane 32 is connected through gearbox 34A,34B to first drive axis 3050 that it rotates at half the rotational speed of the wheels 31 A,3 lB and in an opposite anticlockwise direction. The vane axis 33 is parallel to the first drive axis 30.
Wheels 31 A,3 I B acts as first orbiting means allowing the vane axis 33 to orbit the first drive axis 30.
A second vane 42 is connected at opposing ends to the perimeter of wheels 41A,41B where the vanes are supported to rotate about a first vane axis 43. Vane 42 is connected through gearbox 44A,44B to second drive axis 40 so that it rotates at half the rotational speed of the wheels 41 A14 I B and in an opposite clockwise direction. The vane axis 43 is parallel to the second drive axis 40. Wheels 41 A,41B acts as second orbiting means allowing the vane axis 43 to orbit the second drive axis 40.
In use either the first and second drive axis are driven, e.g. with a motor, and the first and second vanes deliver an air flow. Alternatively air flows over the first and second vanes and the first and second vanes drive the first and second axis.
The vanes 32,42 are substantially planar. The vanes 32,42 are symmetrical and the axis of symmetly is also the vane axis 33,43 respectively. The movement of the vanes are out of phase with each other to prevent the vanes touching each other. As shown, the width of a vane is substantially twice the width of the diameter of the orbits provided by the toothed wheels.
Referring now to Figures 2A to 2H, a sequence of the movement of the vanes 32,42 is shown as they rotate through 360 degrees. One side of each vane is shown in bold to illustrate the vane rotation.
As shown in Figures 2A to 211, the vanes 32,42 orbit the drive axis 3 0,40 twice for each single revolution of a vane. Also the edge of the first vane 32 passes adjacent the second drive axis 40 (see Figures 2C and 2G) as the first vane axis orbits the first drive axis, and the edge of the second vane 42 passes adjacent the first drive axis 30 (see Figures 2A and 2E) as the second vane axis orbits the second drive axis.
If the drive axis are driven (such as by a motor), and airflow is created as shown by the arrows.
Device I could thus be an object like a fan. Alternatively if airflow is passed over the vanes in the opposite direction to the arrows, e.g. by wind, the drive axis are rotated by the vanes. Device I could thus be a wind generator.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example, instead of toothed wheels, the first and second drive axis could each form the rotational axis of a radially extending arm having one end connected to the drive axis, and the first and second vane axis is each adjacent the other free end of one arm, each arm forming the orbiting means. The two arms may be connected whereby rotation of one arm contra rotates the other arm. Also instead of two vanes, the device of the invention could just have a single vane.
Although the invention has been described as a prime mover to deliver an airflow or be powered by an airflow, it could deliver a fluid flow or be powered by a fluid flow. The term airflow used herein thus extends to a fluid flow (any gas or liquid).
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
