Abstract

An annular re-rounding/positioning/restraining clamp has at least one steel or hardened plate 1 embedded into the inner circumference either as a removable item or as part of its manufacture. The plate has an inscription, e.g. "clamped", to mark a plastics pipe held by the clamp. This allows all concerned parties, e.g. user and management of the pipe, to have physical evidence of correct clamping or subsequent work, e.g. electrofusion, carried out on the pipe.

PATENT APPLICATION
TITLE: Proof Positive Plastic Pipe Marking and Embossing System
BACKGROUND:
Plastic pipes sometimes need to be re-rounded, and always need to be clamped before Electrofusion or Butt-Fusion jointing to ensure the pipes do not move during the welding process. Currently there is no way of proving that the pipes being electrofusion welded have been correctly clamped during the process of welding, and there is evidence that a large percentage of welded joint failures are due to incorrect preparation of re-rounding and failure of clamping the pipe.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION:
To overcome the problem of poor installation techniques, this invention forces the operator of the electrofusion process to prove the pipe has been prepared correctly and clamped during the electrofusion process by embossing/marking the plastic pipe on either side of the fitting/joint with a legend fitted to the clamping rings which may contain a steel/hardened plate, for example "CLAMPED" and which at the time of clamping marks the pipe as proof of using the clamp in the correct manner.
ADVANTAGES: The contractor(s) using the equipment can show that they have prepared the pipe correctly by demonstrating the LEGEND embossed pipe on either side of the joint.
The contractors customer/owner of the asset/pipe system can easily check that each and every joint on the system has been clamped correctly by checking for the LEGEND embossing on either side of the joint made by the invention The invention is designed in such a way that it can be fitted to any size of re-rounding or clamping device.
The invention is designed in such a way that it can be used to mark any size/diameter of plastic pipe that has to be clamped or re-rounded for electrofusion jointing.
The invention can be used as a cold embossing device or heated to suit the application when required.

Claims (1)

1: An invention to physically emboss/indelibly mark plastic pipes ensuring/proving competent work has been carried out to best practice procedures when for example rerounding, clamping, or restraining pipes and fittings during the Electrofusion or Butt-Fusion welding process.
2: A LEGEND marking device to effect the claim 1: that may be worded/manufactured to suit the contractor or Standards agency(s) and mark/emboss the plastic pipes being clamped or re-rounded or restrained using a mechanical or hydraulically actuated device to effect the emboss.
3: A LEGEND marking device as in 2: that may be removed or part of the re-rounding/clamping /restraining device to allow interchange ability between differing clamp/ring sizes as required.
