Abstract
A fire alarm system manual design template includes ribbed outer edge 1 to discourage incorrect use of template, hole 2 for use as a fire detector symbol template at actual detector location, cut groove 3 for marking maximum permitted radii of an automatic smoke point type fire detector coverage as described within BS5839:2002 Part 1 to the required scale, and second cut groove 4 for marking radii less than that of the maximum permitted coverage as described within BS5839:2002 Part 1 to the required scale.
Description
System Design Template This inventjon relates to a device fbr manually creating Fire Alarm System designs.
When manually designing Fire Alarm system that meet the relevant British Standard (iii this case 1355839:2002 Part 1) due care and attention has to be given to the specific permitted maximum radii of coverage allowed fbr each type of automatic point tyne fire detector. The 85 above clearly states that an automatic smoke point type detector should be deemed to have a maximum radius of no more than 7.5 Metres and likewise, that an automatic point type heat detector should have no more than a radius of 5.3 Metres.
The existing means of manually measuring this distance is limited to: a) The use of a piece of string cut to the specific radii required tstzed using a scale rule), attaching one end to a writing instrument j.e. pen or pencil) and the other to a sharp point for inserting into paper drawing for stability. The sharp point is inserted into the drawing at the centre of the proposed automatic detector position and the writing instrument is pushed in an arc to the full extent of the strIng, thus fbrnüng a circle upon said drawing to indicate the diameter of the detector coverage.
b The use of a compass opened to the appropriate width as indicated by a scale rule.
Both of the above are unwieldy, time consuming and routinely result in radii that are not truly accurate, as the actual means of marking are not tixed and subject to movement during the execution of the task. It is not uncommon to find that either the compass or the nail / pin has moved before completing the full arc. and you are required to erase this attempt before repeating the whole action again. The string is also likely to stretch or contract, again resulting in inaccurate radii that will not meet the 135 requirements To overcome these problems, the present invention proposes a tire alarm design template of a rigid and fixed structure with the maximum radius as a groove, with optional grooves for smaller radii at that same scale.
This invention does not requ ire any adjustment before, during or after the required arc has been drawn. thus reducing the time spent manually designing fire alarm systems to 13S5839:2002 Part 1, whilst also ontimising their accuracy.
The proposed template will be pie-manufactured to the relevant sizes of detector coverage radii matching each of the required scales of drawing that are commonly used within the relevant industries. 2.
The tnvenuon will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanvng drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the Design Template in its entirety.
In Figure 1, a ribbed edge (1) is shown to discourage unintentional use of the template perimeter as this will be larger than the maximum radius of coverage as permitted by BSSS3S:2002 Part 1. The hole shown at the centre (2) is to be used for marking the drawing at the exact point of the detector and may be used as a template for the actual detector symbol if requIred. The first cut groove (3) is the maximum diameter for the particular detector coverage at that scale, as per 1385839:2002 Part i guidelines. The second cut groove (4) is for the optional radii of the detector that is less than that described by BS5829:2C'02 Part I, to be used on a design specifle basis. 3.
