Abstract
An independent authentication hosting device 2 has strong authentication such as biometric and pin code that acts as a host device when linked to client devices and resources. It can be used in conjunction with, or in place of those client devices and resources, it has a memory that contains the unique security data of the device itself, the owner's identification and authentication data, the data of the other devices and items that are linked to it and is designed to be used with existing authentication and transaction processing systems.
Description
1 2450733 An Independent Authentication Hosting Device This patent
relates to a device that is used as an independent authentication hosting device. It has a strong authentication system such as biometric and pin code authentication.
The independent authentication hosting device is used in conjunction with third party authentication devices and resources such as debit cards, credit cards, tickets and vouchers (client devices) that are issued by various organisations in order to strengthen the security of those devices and guarantee ownership of the resources they give access to. The individual can then use the host device in place of the client devices and resources or in conjunction with them. The device is designed to use existing authentication and transaction processing systems.
The invention is described as an independent authentication hosting device with strong authentication such as biometric and pin code that acts as a host device when linked to client devices and resources, and as a result can be used in conjunction with, or in place of those client devices and resources, it has a memory that contains the unique security data of the device itself, the owner's identification and authentication data, the data of the other devices and items that are linked to it and is designed to be used with existing authentication and transaction processing systems.
No such independent portable authentication device presently exists that give users the ability to add third party client devices and resources onto it, then let the user use it in place of those client devices or in conjunction with them.
Existing multi function devices that are used for transactional and authentication purposes, deals with predefined functions such as, cash wallet, ticketing and identification. They are not primarily authentication devices and do not allow the user to add third party client devices and resources whenever they like -in order to increase the security of those devices. In fact all existing transactional devices and resource3 such as debit cards, credit cards, tickets etc. can be used in conjunction with the invention to strengthen their security. This invention can also be used with devices and resources that were not initially designed or issued to be used with it.
The invention in addition to other applications, seeks to resolve the following issues: Security -Existing authentication devices and cards such as debit and credit cards as well as identification cards are prone to fraud. If they unfortunately fall into the hands of fraudulent parties their details can be used to conduct transactions over the phone, on the Internet and even over the counter. A strong independent authentication with biometric authentication for example provides a much more secure means of authentication as it ensures a direct link with the owner. By using this device it means that users can then consolidate their client devices on to the more secure host device and use the host device in place of those client devices or in conjunction with them. The invention with its strong authentication technology then act as a secure buffer for the other devices and resources.
Cost -Strong authentication systems that incorporate biometric technology for example are expensive for most organisations to implement and maintain. Having an independent authentication device with biometric and pin code access that is linked to their devices, means that they do not have to implement and maintain their own infrastructure. They can then issue their devices as normal and request a link to the host device. This will ensure that their devices be used with the authentication hosting device which will contain the relevant data of their client devices.
Privacy -Certain individuals are sceptical about issues of privacy when it comes to giving out personal data such as their biometric data to any organisations that want to issue authentication and identification devices for concern about the use and potential misuse of such data. The invention provides the option for the individual's data to be located only on the independent authentication device itself and not stored on to the databases of the operator or the various organisations that issued the client devices. All that is required is the client devices and resources be linked to the independent host device.
Temporary Requirement for a strong authentication device -There are organisations whose requirement for strong authentication technology such as biometric and access code based authentication and is only one off, or for a short period of time. This includes organ isations issuing tickets and vouchers for one off events in which there is a paramount need to ensure proper ownership and access to the right resources. An independent (biometric and access code) authenticated device ensures that organisations don't have to implement their own infrastructure only for that event. They will simply request that their resources be linked to the independent authentication hosting device to guarantee ownership and identity.
A sample illustration of the device is shown in the accompanying diagram with its primary components as follows 1. An interactive Memory component -formatted with security data as well as the ability to accept all relevant data of the users and the linked devices by communicating with external devices and systems.
2. An encasing unit -This holds the interactive memory component and also enhances its ability to communicate with external devices and systems.
The interacti"e memory component is configured with the following information; The unique security data of the authentication device -These include (but not limited to) the devices own unique issue number, batch number and other tracking data that are unique to the device.
The users identification and authentication data -These include (but not limited to) a combination of the Biometric data, access code, name, address, photograph and any other data that may be required.
The data of the other devices and items that are linked to the device -These include (but not limited to) the relevant data of the issuing body, the additional authentication data of the linked devices, as well as the usage statistics of the linked devices.
The external encasing unit takes different forms and design depending on the eventual application and the environment under which it is being used. It can take the form of a smart card, fob or any form that will enable it to function for its intended use.
