Abstract

An electrical power consumption monitoring unit is attached to an electrical supply and compares the power consumption with a threshold and annunciates the comparison result. The device may be attached to a supply by a clamp ammeter or a parallel ammeter, and the comparison system may comprise analogue or digital electronics and include multiple thresholds. The comparison result may be indicated, by a lamp, multiple coloured lamps, LEDs, an audible sounder, a buzzer, or a mechanical indicator and the annunciation device may be remote from the comparator, linked by a direct electrical connection or a wireless radio connection. The device is used to indicate when action should be taken to reduce electrical consumption, for example by turning off appliances and fittings.

Description

Description:
This invention relates to a device for monitoring electrical power consumption and announcing when action should be taken to reduce consurrtption.
The cost of energy is increasing and people are often unable to keep track of how much energy each appliance or fitting is using.
To overcome this problem, the present invention proposes an electrical power consumption monitor unit comprising a means for attaching the unit to an electrical suppiy, a comparison system which compares the power consumption level against a preset threshold or thresholds, and annunciation means such that the comparison result can be output.
The power supply attachment means is preferably provided by a clamp ammeter, although the power supply attachment means may also be provided by other means such as a parallel ammeter circuit.
The preferred comparison system is provided by an analogue electronic circuit, although the comparison system may also be provided by other means such as digital electronic means.
The preferred annunciation means is provided by a set of colour-coded lights, although the annunciation means may also be provided by other means such as a buzzer or mechanical signal.
The annunciation means may also be remote from the comparison system and linked by means of a direct electrical connection or by means of wireless radio connection.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example: A clamp ammeter is positioned around the live supply wire at the electricity consumer meter. The low voltage ammeter output is fed to a battery operated electronic circuit comprising a switching transistor, associated components and a light emitting diode. The battery voltage is switched by the transistor at a preset threshold by the ammeter output to illuminate the light emitting diode. This signal will command that electrical appliances and fittings should be turned off until power consumption is below the preset threshold.
