Abstract

A page turning device comprises two rods 1 of plastics material one of which has fitted at one end (the top) a conical part 2 of non-slip material and at the other end (the bottom) an expanded foam handle (Fig. 2) that provides a suitable grip. The second is fitted at the top with a small plastic cone and a similar handle to the bottom. Together, used with one in each hand, they provide a simple, lightweight and portable form of page turner for those people with upper limb/ hand disability.

Description

Reading Stix (Page Turner) Many people who have a debilitating illness or injury affecting the upper limb / hand have great difficulty turning pages of books and magazines. This can have impact on quality of life issues and independence particularly when reading has become one of the few leisure activities that the person can maintain.

Page torners that are available and I have knowledge of at the moment can be cumbersome or are found to be difficult for the user to carry about with them and require some sort of power source This invention consisting of two plastic rods with adapted handles will allow independence to carry out this task.

The invention is lightweight and requires very little upper limb movement to use.

It is portable and can therefore be used in any location without drawing too much attention to the user.

It requires no electrical or other power source.

An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings.

-Figurel shows the rod that is used in the dominant hand; -figure 2 shows the rod to be used in the non dominant hand; and -figures 3and 4 show the different types of handles to be used according to the disability.

In figure 1 a lightweight plastic rod 1 is fitted with a non slip material 2 to the upper end held in place with plastic ring 4 and an expanded foam handle, to the lower end, of a shape to suit the users hand grip.

This allows the user to place the rod upon the page to be turned and with gentle pressure by the upper end of the rod to move the page with minimum movement of the hand / upper limb allow movement from the page below.

In figure two a lightweight rod 1 is fitted with a small plastic cone 3 held in place by a plastic ring 4 and a handle as in figure one. This rod is used to complete the turn of the page if necessary by placing under the page being turned and into the curve created. It is then used to maintain the turned page in position.

Figure 3 is an expanded foam handle tubular in shape which gives suitable grip to the rods Figure 4 is a spherical shaped expanded foam handle which gives an alternative grip. Claim
