Abstract

A cable spool dispenses and retracts cables of varying diameters from under a table to equipment on the table surface. The spool allows any standard cable with terminated ends to be fitted to the device, and has a coil spring to cause the retraction.

Description

Cable Spool This invention relates to a device for dispensing cables
onto the surface of a table.
Meeting or work tables require the facility to bring various power and data cables from the sockets in the floor to a wide range of equipment on the table top.
Conventional cable management is achieved by introducing a duplicate set of power and data sockets on or just below the table surface. This solution requires the end user to bring the correct connection lead(s) to every meeting. Furthermore, this approach usually produces a bulk of cables underneath the table that look unsightly and pose a risk to health and safety. In addition, the excess cables on the table surface have to be coiled and put somewhere.
To overcome these problems, the present invention proposes a device that dispenses and retracts cables of varying diameters from under a table to equipment on the table surface.
The power for this device is preferably provided by stored energy within a coiled spring.
The device makes use of standard, commercially available cables with terminated ends.
The device is suitable for use with cables that are sensitive to tight bend radii (eg.
CAT 6 data cables).
The cable spool remains in a fixed position under the table at all times and the cable is pulled from one end only.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 01 shows a typical table with a cable flap and equipment waiting to receive cables positioned on the surface.
Figure 02 shows the standard cables entering the cable spools.
Figure 03 shows how the terminated cable end is presented to the user beneath the flap in the table top.
Figure 04 shows how the cable end can manually be withdrawn from below the
table top.
Figure 05 shows the cable connected to the equipment.
Figure 06 shows the cable being disconnected and retracting into the cable spool.
Figure 07 shows a horizontal cross section of the cable spool.
Figure 08 shows (section B-B) the cable entering the cable spool from the floor Box.
Figure 09 shows (section A-A) the cable leaving the cable spool.
Figures 01 -06 are illustrations that show the cable spool in operation. The spool is located under the table in a fixed position. One end of the cable is plugged directly into a socket in the floor and the other terminated end is held directly below the surface of the table. The terminated end can then be pulled to extend the flex to equipment anywhere on the table. When released the cable will automatically retract.
Figure 07 shows a horizontal cross section through the cable spool. The device has one central pivot point with a coil spring attached. On one side of the central pin there is a large diameter spool and on the other side a small diameter spool.
Both spools rotate together and at the same number of revolutions per minute.
Figure 08 (section B-B) shows the cable entering the small diameter spool. The cable is tied (a) at the point of entry and the coil is tensioned prior to loading the flex. The cable is then manually wrapped onto the small diameter side. The cable then exits this side of the spool at a point on the circumference. Once again the cable is tied at this point.
The cable on the small diameter spool is free to unwind within the casement as, the spool rotates.
Figure 09 (section A-A) shows the larger diameter spool from which the cable exits the device. The cable is loaded onto this side by securing the metal case and then allowing the stored energy in the spring to coil the cable. This action in turn loosens the cable on the small diameter spool. The action of pulling or extending the cable puts energy back into the spring, tightens the cable on the small spool and empties the cable on the large diameter spool.
