Abstract
The present invention provides a 'Bench-Block' for the storage of components as they are disassembled from a cylinder head of an engine. The invention includes storage areas which make it easier to reassemble components by providing a numbering system for the components. Storage areas 2,3 (for camshafts), 4 (for shims, lifters, spring locks and retainers), 5 (for springs), 6 (for inlet valves) and 7 (for exhaust valves) may be provided. The invention further includes a method for moving and storing the block with components in the form of carry handles 8. The invention shown is for a 16 valve engine but the 'bench-block' may be extended for 20 or 24 valve engines. The invention can be used for the engines of automobiles, lorries, boats, motor-cycles and aircraft.
Description
Bench-Block' for Storage of Combustion Engine Parts Abstract The
present invention provides a Bench-Block' for the storage of components as they are disassembled from a cylinder head of an auto-mobile.
The invention includes storage areas which make it easier to re-assemble components by providing a numbering system for said components i.e. camshafts, valves, springs etc. The invention further includes a method for moving and storing the block with components in the form of carry handles.
The present invention as shown in the figures is for a 16 valve engine.
Other forms of the invention will show the bench-block' to be extended to include 20 valve or 24 valve versions.
The present invention could also be modified to include other types of engine i.e. lorry, boat, motor-cycle, aircraft etc.
Field of Invention
The present invention relates to a device for the use in the maintenance of combustion engines, specifically the cylinder head of an automobile engine. The device provides an organised storage block for disassembly and reassembly of the cylinder head.
Background to the Invention
In the automobile workshop various types of flat benches are used for components to be laid upon for when disassembling engine parts. These are typically flat surfaces which although not unsuitable do not provide any system for the storage of these parts. This is left up to the individual when stripping down a typical cylinder head. If another individual were to then work on this engine, no reassembly order of parts would be apparent. This could result in the wrong valves or springs being replaced in the wrong order. If using the bench-block for the removal of cylinder head components the following procedure can be followed. Those skilled in the art will know the technical terms and functions. (refer to figure #1 & #2) 1. Remove camshaft clamps and place them into top channel between camshaft mounts on bench-block' (1). (clamps are not shown and are all similar size so position is not important) 2. Remove inlet and exhaust camshaft and place them onto the corresponding positions (2) & (3) on the top of the bench block.
3. Remove any shims and lifters and place them into the storage tray (4) ui-the bench block (not all engines have shims and lifters).
4. Remove spring locks and retainers and place into storage tray (4) (these can be reassembled and used in any order).
5. Remove each spring from assembly, and place onto its corresponding numbered peg (5) on bench block.
6. Remove each inlet valve and place them onto there corresponding holes (6) in the bench block (inlet valve to inlet camshaft side as indicated by I').
7. Remove each exhaust valve and place them onto their corresponding holes (7) in the bench block (exhaust valves to exhaust camshaft side as indicated by 0').
The cylinder head has now been stripped in an orderly procedure and can be moved to storage using carry handles (8) for when ready to reassemble. This then frees up the workbench for use of another bench block' for further engine repairs.
Manufacture The bench block will provide an easily manufacturable system for storage of engine parts. The bench block will be manufactured from typically hard plastic, typically polypropylene which can be vacuum formed.
This provides the means for mass manufacture. The bench block will be cheap, tough and maintenance free and will withstand the rigours of a typical automobile repair shop. It will also be capable of withstanding industrial strength cleaning fluids.
