Abstract

A modular waste recycling system comprises plastics crates, with supporting frames and mobile bins to receive them. The crates are of differing colours to denote the type of waste to be deposited in each. This enables organisation and standardisation of the recycling of kitchen waste from the moment of disposal. The crates may be slidable along rails within a frame or bin. The crates may be of size and shape suitable to fit within a rigid frame in a typical fitted kitchen base unit. The frame can alternatively be used as a free standing or mobile crate storage by attaching a handle, base wheels and/or legs (Figures 3 and 4). Larger outdoor bins may accommodate more crates than those indoors. The crates may have hinged lids (Figure 5).

Description

Modular Household Waste Recycling System This invention relates to the
disposal, sorting and storage of household waste.
In light of the current desire to preserve our natural environment, and with the considerable costs of landfill sites, it is increasingly important to recycle as much household waste as possible. In spite of this the amount of waste recycled in the United Kingdom remains comparatively low. In terms of the householder, one of the major obstacles to efficient kitchen waste recycling is the lack of a coherent, consistent, practical, clean and tidy method of waste disposal and storage at the point where the waste is generated.
The modular system of plastic crates, supporting frames and mobile bins proposed here aims to simplify, organise and standardise the recycling of kitchen waste from the moment of disposal, through sorting and storage to either doorstep collection or deposit at a recycling centre. The key design feature of the system is a number of colour-coded plastic crates of a specific size and shape suitable to fit into a typical UK fitted kitchen base unit. The crates are stored in a rigid frame secured into the kitchen base unit, and each crate can be slid in and out during daily use. For those people without suitable kitchen units, the rigid frame can be used as free-standing or mobile crate storage by attaching a handle, base wheels and/or legs. The colour coding of crates corresponds to a relevant waste sorting system such as: Red (glass), Blue (paper), Silver (cans/aluminium), Black (plastic), Green (kitchen/garden organic waste), Brown (clothing). The crates would be of two different sizes to allow for some individual variation in the amount of each different type of waste produced by a household, as well as the differing policies of the various recycling authorities. Once removed from the area of kitchen storage the crates would be firmly stackable, but also of a compatible size to fit into a larger outdoor mobile storage bin, to await either collection or periodic trips to a recycling centre. The outdoor bin would accommodate several crates of different sizes, with a swing opening front panel for easy sliding in and out of the filled plastic crates. In order to address issues of cleanliness and safety, the glass and organic waste crates would be fitted with an attachable top lid, which in turn has an opening flap.
Figure 1 shows the rigid frame designed to fit into a standard UK fitted kitchen base unit.
Figure 2 shows the rigid frame containing two crates.
Figure 3 shows the rigid frame with handle, base wheel and feet attachments.
Figure 4 shows an outdoor movable bin for storage of up to six small crates or three large crates.
Figure 5 shows a small and a large crate, the latter with a top lid and opening flap.
Figure 1 shows the rigid frame designed to fit into a standard UK fitted kitchen base unit (frame size approximately 45 x 40 x 60cm, width x depth x height). The frame is secured in place by means of wood screws through any of the guide holes I situated on its back and bottom surfaces. The frame also has three equally spaced side crate supports 2, so that three small crates or one large and one small crate can be stored (as illustrated in Figure 2).
Figure 3 shows the rigid frame with handle 3, base wheel 4 and feet attachments 5 suitable for free-standing or movable storage of crates within the kitchen or utility room.
Figure 4 shows an outdoor movable bin for storage of up to six small crates or three large crates. The front hinge-opening panel 6 allows crates to be slid in and out, and a top opening panel 7 allows top loading of waste into the uppermost crate. The overhanging lip 8 acts as a means of retaining the front panel in a closed position.
Figure 5 shows a small and a large crate, the latter with attached top lid 9 and opening flap 10 for safety and cleanliness of use.
Although this system comprises many individually simple components, the overall concept of providing flexible storage capacity within a clearly standardised method of sorting and organising waste within a variety of kitchen and home layouts, provides the means to facilitate kitchen waste recycling across the country.
