Abstract

An anchor chain (3) is lifted by a windlass (1) via a rotating gyspy or wildcat (2). The anchor chain passes through a rotating offset hawser pipe (8) and is then stored within a chain locker (6). Normally the hawser pipe is fixed in a stationary position below the windlass and the anchor chain may become entangled when in the stored position (7), see Fig 1. The rotation of the hawser pipe is synchronous with the windlass and may be electrically or mechanically powered and may be independent from the drive to the windlass. As the hawser pipe is offset from the centreline of rotation the anchor chain may be spread over a larger area (9) of the chain locker.

Description

Rotatjn2 offset hawser pipe to distribute anchor chain on small and
medium size boats Pile of Anchor Chain One of the common annoyances of an electric windless on small and medium size boats happens when recovering a long length of anchor chain. The chain almost inevitable piles up in a conical shape in the chain locker and jams under the gypsy, and the only way to clear it is to reach down and dislodge the pile.

Solution If the hawser pipe is offset, and rotates in synchronous with the windless winding in the chain, then the chain would be distributed more evenly in the chain locker.

This rotation could be achieved either by mechanical or electrical means (coupled to, or independent of the windless), thus ensuring a better distribution of the recovered * chain in the locker and limiting the build up of this conical pile of chain.

: :: When deploying the anchor the mechanism would be disengaged to enable the hawser * . pipe to rotate freely and allow the free flow of the anchor chain from the locker, thus allowing the chain to be recovered from the locker in much the same way as it was * : * laid down, avoiding jamming of the chain due to over lapping layers. *
