Toasting-apparatus.-A toasting-appliance is provided with a sensitive element which lies in contact with the surface which is being toasted and assumes the temperature thereof, the element being associated with means which withdraw the bread from the heaters or operate a visible or audible' signal when the toasting is complete. As shown in Fig. 1, the slice holder 6 of an electric toaster is pivoted at 7 and is retained in the toasting position by a pawl 14 which engages notches 10 on a bracket 9. The pawl 14 is carried by a lever 11 balanced at 12 on a knifeedge and positioned by the opposed forces of a spring 15 and the sensitive element or wire 17. The wire 17 lies against the slice and is adjusted by a screw 19. Expansion of the wire 17 allows the pawl 14 gradually to be raised from the notches 10 and allows the holder 6 to pivot downwards away from the heaters. As shown in Fig. 5, the wire 17<a> is secured to a contact maker 20 which is in circuit with the wires 29, 30 of the heating-elements, a contact breaker 26 and a solenoid 22. Expansion of the wire 17<a> makes contact between the parts 27, 28 which causes the core 23 of the solenoid 22 to move axially and break the circuit. The head 24 of the core 23 engages a projection on the pivoted slice holder which is thereby swung away from the heaters. In a modification, the head 24 is arranged to operate a switch in the heater circuit. In further modifications, the contact maker is placed in a buzzer or lamp circuit, and a duplex arrangement for use with two slice holders is described. Two or more wires or other expansion elements may be used.
