Abstract

243,301. Bach, R. Nov. 20, 1924, [Convention date]. Felt.-A process for working up animal fibres such as hair into felts more particularly for the manufacture of hats consists in treating the fibres with aldehyde or ketone carrotting-agents alone or with mercury or other metallic salt carrotting-agents. The process may be applied to loose fibres, to half fulled felt, or to hairy skins. The carrotting-agents may be added to the fulling liquid. The carrotting-agents may be applied in solution or in the form of vapours, and the process may be carried out under pressure and at temperatures above 100‹ C. After the treatment with the carrotting-agents, the material may be subjected to the action of oxidizing-agents such as hydrogen peroxide, permanganates, per borates, nitric acid, &c. Suitable carrotting- agents are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, or their compounds with bisulphites, acetone, aceto-acetic ester, acetophenone, or mixtures or compounds decomposing into aldehydes and ketones. In an example, the hair of hares, rabbits &c. is placed in formaldehyde solution slightly acidified with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid and at a temperature of 25-80‹ C.
