Abstract

An antenna device includes a substantially rectangular board having a shorter-side length "a", and further includes first and second antenna elements and a switch circuit. The switch circuit selectively causes the first and second antenna elements to serve as a balanced antenna or causes the first and second antenna elements to serve as an unbalanced antenna and as a passive element, respectively. The antenna elements exhibit a wavelength " g 1" for a basically established frequency and a wavelength " g 2" for the highest frequency in a frequency band to be used. The antenna elements have an electrical length " r " that is equal to g 1/4. The first antenna element has a physical length "L1" that is shorter than the electrical length " r ". The second antenna element has a physical length "L2", and a sum of the physical lengths "L1" and "L2" is shorter than the shorter-side length "a". A half of the shorter-side length "a" is shorter than g 2/4.
