Abstract

A trap, for the catching of crabs or lobsters, includes a mesh cage 1 made from metal or a plastics material, in which the sides are joined together by fastenings 4 which may either be wire ties or crimped sleeves. Attached to the cage are a plurality of snares 3. In use, bait is placed in the cage which attracts the crustaceans to the trap. As the fisherman pulls up the line attached to the trap, the snare loops tighten around any prey animals which may have been caught in the vicinity.

Description

LOBSTER/CRAB TRAP The invention relates to a lobster/crab trap which
includes a mesh cage with two or more snares attached to the cage which is designed to be used in conjunction with a fIshing rod.
Lobster and crab traps are well known, but up to now they suffer from the disadvantage that they cannot be used via a fishing rod.
All current designs of lobster traps (pots) are intended to be left submerged in the sea and left in the water for several hours, while the fisherman hopes that a crab or lobster climbs into the pot'.
An object of this invention is to provide a lobster/crab trap which allows the fishermen the opportunity to catch lobsters or crabs via a fishing rod.
Accordingly, this invention provides a trap, in the form of a mesh cage (for holding the bait to lure the intended prey) with snares attached to the sides of the cage. When in use, and the prey tries to eat the bait held within the cage, the fisherman simply pulls up his line, and consequentially the cage, and the snares tighten around and hold the prey while the fisherman retracts the cage from the water.
Preferably the cage is made of metal or plastics material, or from a combination of these materials.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE 1 shows the whole trap, complete with mesh cage constructed from six sides (1), and snares (3) attached to the sides (1) via crimp sleeves (2).
FIGURE 2 shows one of the six mesh sides (I) of the cage.
FIGURE 3 shows a snare (3) before it is attached to the cage. The snare (3) is formed by means of fonning a small loop, by passing the snare lead through a crimp sleeve (2) twice. Then by threading the snare lead through the ioop, before attaching the snare (3) to the side of the cage (1) by means of a crimp sleeve (2).
FIGURE 4 shows the construction method for the assembly of the cage, by fastening the six sides (1) together by means of wire ties (4) or crimp sleeves to form the cage.

Claims (3)

  1. I. A trap, which consists of a mesh cage which has two or more snares attached to the cage, so that the prey can be caught in a snare.
  2. 2. A trap as claimed in Claim I which is made from metal, plastics material, or from a combination of these materials.
  3. 3. A trap substantially as herein described above and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
