Abstract

A metal casing <B>3</B> for protecting a building element <B>2</B> from fire is arranged to surround at least a portion of the building element <B>2</B> and has external surfaces coated with a layer of intumescent material <B>4</B>. The intumescent material <B>4</B> may be cast onto the casing <B>3</B> which may comprise at least two joined sections. The casing <B>3</B> may be perforated. The intumescent material <B>4</B> may be crosslinkable material, especially an epoxy material.

Description

Apparatus for Protecting a Building Element from Fire The invention
relates to an apparatus for protecting a building element from fire. The invention is particularly suitable for protecting structural steel sections from fire, but it is not limited to this application.
Structural steel sections are load bearing columns used in the construction industry. During a fire, if the temperature of the steel columns exceeds 550 C, then they will lose their load bearing capacity and the building will collapse.
It is known to use intumescent materials to protect structural steel sections from fire. Intumescent materials act by expanding rapidly by up to eight times their original thickness under the influence of extreme heat to create an insulating barrier between the substrate to which the intumescent material is applied and the fire.
In one known method, the intumescent material is sprayed directly onto the structural steel section. A disadvantage of this method is that it does not disguise the profile of the structural steel section, and it is difficult to obtain an acceptable finish by spraying the intumescent material. * ** * * S I...
In another known method, an intumescent material is painted on to **** the structural steel sections to offer fire protection. Decorative secondary **** cladding is then attached directly on top of the thin film of intumescent material. The cladding has a good finish and hides the profile of the steel.

* expand to form an insulating barrier to the structural steel. This means that this method provides limited fire protection and breaches the integrity of the previously applied system.
It is an object of this invention to seek to mitigate the above disadvantages.
Accordingly, the invention provides an apparatus for protecting a building element from fire, the apparatus comprising a metal casing for surrounding at least a portion of the building element, the external surfaces of the metal casing being coated with a layer of intumescent material.
By using a metal casing, it is possible to hide the profile of the building element. This means that the profile of the casing is not limited to being the same as that of the building element, and can be of any desired shape. Moreover, because the intumescent material is coated on the external surfaces of the metal casing, there is room for this material to expand on exposure to extreme heat so that the fire protection performance of the apparatus is not compromised.
The intumescent material may be a cross-linkable material. For example, the intumescent material may be an epoxy material. Such a material has been found to provide a particularly good finish as well as providing an effective insulating barrier.
The intumescent material may be cast onto the metal casing.

The metal casing may comprise at least two sections, which, in use, are joined together. This facilitates storage and delivery of the apparatus.
It also means that it is possible to provide an apparatus which can be applied to a building element after that element has been installed in a SI....

For example, the metal casing may be divided longitudinally. It will then be possible to apply the metal casing to an elongate structural steel section which has already been installed.
The metal casing may be perforated.
The apparatus may comprise means for fastening the metal casing to a building element. Such means are particularly useful where the diameter of the metal casing is greater than that of the building element so that it is necessary to hold the metal casing in place.

To manufacture the apparatus 1, a layer 4 of intumescent material is cast over a supporting perforated mild steel sheet which has been pre- rolled or pressed into shape to form a cylindrical metal casing 3.
The layer 4 of intumescent material (a commercially available epoxy material) is then cured, and the metal casing 3 is cut longitudinally to form two symmetrical sections 5. A line of screw holes 6 are formed along each edge 7 of each section 5.
The sections 5 are assembled around the building element 2, which in the described embodiment is a structural steel section, to re-form the cylindrical metal casing 3. Two curved clamping plates 8, each including two parallel lines of screw holes 9, are then positioned on the inside of the metal casing 3 so that a clamping plate 8 straddles each join between the sections 5. The clamping plates 8 are then fastened using a plurality of screws or bolts 10, each of which goes through a screw hole 6 in the coated metal casing 3 and a screw hole 9 in a clamping plate 8. Each clamping plate 8 runs the entire length of the metal casing 3.
Any holes in the layer 4 of intumescent material such as along the joins between the sections 5 are filled with uncured intumescent material.

The two sections 5 are attached to the metal casing 4 by way of a number of profiled "U" brackets 11. * S
Two brackets 11 at the lower end of the metal casing 3 are bolted *....S * S directly to the floor and section 5 and are peened or bolted to the building element 2 to allow the element 2 to stand at floor level 12. Two brackets 11 at the upper end of the metal casing are attached to the building element 2 above the suspended ceiling level 13. A fire batt collar 14 rests on top of the upper brackets 11 to completely surround the building element 2. Mastic 15 is used to seal the joint between the cladding and the batt, and epoxy intumescent fillets are applied to the joints between the batt and steel sections.
A second layer 16 of intumescent material is then applied to the exposed part of the building element 2 above the suspended ceiling level 13.

Claims (9)

1. Apparatus for protecting a building element from fire, the apparatus comprising a metal casing for surrounding at least a portion of the building element, the external surfaces of the metal casing being coated with a layer of intumescent material.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1, the intumescent material being a crosslinkable material.
3. Apparatus according to claim 2, the intumescent material being an epoxy material.
4. Apparatus according to any preceding claim, wherein the intumescent material is cast onto the metal casing.
5. Apparatus according to any preceding claim, the metal casing comprising at least two sections, which, in use, are joined together.
6. Apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the metal casing is divided longitudinally.
