Description

ARTICLES
The present invention relates to packaging for cleaning tablets and to packaged products comprising such packaging.
It is known to provide cleaning compositions, by which we include detergent compositions and water-softening compositions, in various forms for use in ware washing machines such as dish and clothes washing machines.
One known form comprises tablets. These are popular with consumers as they avoid the need to measure out powder or granules which can sometimes be somewhat complicated and tiresome.
However, known tablets have a disadvantage compared to the use of powder or granules which is that they reduce the flexibility in measuring out the required quantity of detergent. Instead, it is usual for the same amount of detergent to be added to every washing cycle, which is determined by the size of the tablet, irrespective of whether the crockery or laundry to be cleaned is heavily or lightly soiled and/or whether the machine being operated has a full or reduced load.
Applicants aim to address such disadvantages associated with known tablets by providing smaller tablets which may be used alone or with one or more other tablets, to provide a variable "dose" for use in a washing operation.
However, a problem associated with known tablets, and which may be more significant for smaller tablets, is that they can fit within the mouth of a child.
Whilst it may be unlikely that a child would place a cleaning tablet in their mouth parents remain anxious about this risk. Thus it would be desirable for cleaning tablets to be provided in a "child-proof" form.
TJS3809220 discloses various child safety packages requiring a two stage opening process. However, there remains a need for products which are only difficult for children to open and may conveniently be used by adults.
Accordingly, the present invention aims to address at least one disadvantage associated with the prior art whether discussed herein or otherwise.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided packaging for a cleaning tablet.
The packaging suitably comprises a wrapper comprising a first portion for enclosing one or more tablets and is characterised in that the wrapper comprises a second portion bearing opening means, which comprises a weakness or cut providing a tear starting point, and wherein said first and second portions are conjoined along a boundary line, which comprises a seal or an edge of a seal for closing the first portion, and the second portion comprises first and second holding parts interposed by the opening means and a bridge which connects the first and second holding parts on a side of the opening means opposed to the boundary line and restricts the holding parts from being pulled away from one another, wherein the packaging is arranged to be opened by causing a tear to develop and spread from the opening means to break the bridge and/or to detach the bridge from at least one holding part such that the holding parts can then be pulled away from one another to cause a tear to develop and spread from the opening means across the boundary line.
Suitably, the packaging is configured such that opening is a two stage process requiring the packaging to first be pulled in opposed directions extending transverse to the boundary line and secondly to be pulled in opposed directions extending transverse to said directions of the first stage.
Suitably, the packaging is configured to be opened by a user first holding the first portion and the bridge of the second portion and pulling the first and second portions in generally opposed directions to cause the bridge to break and/or detach from at least one holding part.
Suitably, the packaging is configured such that with the bridge broken and/or detached from one or both holding parts a tear in the wrapper will develop and spread from the opening means towards the boundary line when a user pulls the first and second holding parts in generally opposed directions.
Suitably, the opening means is arranged to provide a starting point for one or more tears which cross the boundary line and breach the seal in use.
I
Suitably, the packaging is arranged such that the bridge can be detached from at least one holding part.
Preferably, the packaging is arranged such that the bridge can be detached from both holding parts.
Suitably, the opening means is arranged to provide a starting point for one or more tears which break the bridge and/or detach the bridge from one or both holding parts in use.
Suitably, in use, the path of the one or more tears which break and/or detach the bridge will determine which parts of the wrapper remain to be used as the holding parts and which part is broken away as the bridge. Suitably, the bridge includes the part of the second portion lying between the opening means and an outward edge of the wrapper on a side (the "outward side") of the opening means opposed to the boundary line. A user may thus be able to readily identify a part of the wrapper which should be held to break the bridge and/or detach the bridge from a holding part.
Suitably, in use, to open the packaging a user can hold the first portion and the bridge of the second portion and pull the first and second portions in generally opposed directions to cause the bridge to break and/or detach from at least one holding part.
A tear may be caused to develop and spread from the opening means to an outward edge of the second portion.
The bridge may thus be broken by being torn. The first and second holding parts may thus be separated on the side of the second portion (the "outward side") which lies on an opposed side of the opening means to the boundary line.
Suitably, two tears are caused to spread from the opening means to an outward edge of the second portion. The bridge may thus be detached from both holding parts by being torn there from. The first and second holding parts may thus be separated on the side of the second portion (the "outward side") which lies on an opposed side of the opening means to the boundary line.
Suitably, until the bridge is broken and/or detached from one or both holding parts it prevents the holding parts, which lie on opposed sides of the opening means, from is being moved apart.
Suitably, with the bridge broken and/or detached from one or both holding parts a user can pull the first and second holding parts in generally opposed directions such that a tear in the wrapper is caused to develop and spread from the opening means towards the boundary line.
Suitably, in use, the holding parts are pulled until the tear spreads across the boundary line such that it breaches the seal closing the first portion of the wrapper. Thus, a tablet enclosed by the wrapper may be accessed.
Opening packaging according to the present invention is suitably a two stage process requiring the packaging to first be pulled in opposed directions extending transverse to the boundary line and secondly to be pulled in opposed directions extending transverse to said directions of the a first stage. This operation may be simple for an adult, even with wet hands, but difficult for a child thus decreasing the likelihood of a child accessing and digesting tablets contained in the packaging.
Suitably, the opening means comprises a weakness or preferably a cut which provides a starting point for a tear for breaking the bridge and/or detaching the bridge from a holding part.
The opening means may comprise a first line comprising a line of weakness or one or more cuts at least part of which extends in a first direction. Suitably said first line provides a starting point for a tear for breaking the is bridge and/or detaching the bridge from a holding part.
Suitably, the opening means comprises a weakness or preferably a cut which provides a starting point for a tear for crossing the boundary line and breaching the seal.
The opening means may comprise a second line comprising a line of weakness or one or more cuts at least part of which extends towards the boundary line in a second direction. Suitably, said second line provides a starting point for a tear for spreading across the boundary line and breaching the seal.
The packaging may comprise any feature as described hereafter.
Suitably, the packaging comprises a wrapper comprising a first portion for enclosing one or more tablets and is characterised in that the wrapper comprises a second portion bearing opening means, wherein said first and second portions are conjoined along a boundary line, which comprises a seal or an edge of a seal, for closing the S first portion and the opening means comprises a first line comprising a line of weakness or one or more cuts extending in a first direction and a second line comprising a line of weakness or one or more cut8 extending towards the boundary line in a second direction.
The packaging may comprise any feature as described hereinbefore or hereafter.
Suitably, the packaging comprises a wrapper comprising a first portion for enclosing one or more tablets and is characterised in that the Wrapper comprises a second portion bearing opening means, wherein said first and second portions are conjoined along a boundary line, which comprises a seal or an edge of a seal, for closing the first portion and the opening means comprises a first line comprising a line of weakness or one or more cuts extending in a first direction and a second line comprising a line of weakness or one or more cuts extending from the first line towards the boundary line in a second direction.
The packaging may comprise any feature as described hereinbefore or hereafter.
Suitably, the packaging comprises a second portion comprising first and second holding parts and a bridge.
Suitably, in use, the packaging is opened by a user holding the second portion (suitably a bridge) on the side of the first line of weakness or cut(s) opposed to the boundary line (the "outward side") and pulling the first and second portions in generally opposed directions to cause tears to develop at the end of the first line such that a part of the outward side of the second portion (suitably a bridge) tears away from the remainder of the wrapper. Suitably, until said part of the outward side of the second portion (suitably a bridge) is removed it prevents the parts (suitably holding parts) o the second portion lying on opposed sides of the second line of weakness or cut(s) from being moved apart.
Suitably, with said outward part of the second portion (suitably a bridge) removed a user can pull parts (suitably holding parts) of the second portion lying on opposed sides of the second line in generally opposed directions such that a tear in the wrapper is caused to develop at the end of the second line lying closest to the boundary line.
Suitably, in use, the parts (suitably holding parts) of the second portion lying on opposed sides of the second line are pulled until the tear spreads from the end of the second line across the boundary line such that it breaches the seal closing the first portion of the wrapper. Thug, a tablet enclosed by the wrapper may be accessed.
Thus, opening packaging according to the present invention is suitably a two stage process as described herein before and may be simple for an adult but difficult for a child.
By "boundary line" it is meant any line, which is preferably unbroken, and which may be straight, curved or zig-zagged, which separates the first portion from the second portion.
The boundary line may comprise a seal closing the first portion. Suitably, the second portion comprises a seal closing the first portion and the boundary line comprises an edge of that seal. Suitably, the boundary line forms an edge of the second portion where it Joins the first portion. The boundary line may thus form an edge of the first portion.
By "first line" it is meant any line, which may be broken or unbroken, and which may be straight, curved or zig- zagged.
Suitably, the first line comprises a cut, preferably a single cut which may be substantially straight.
By "second line" it is meant any line, which may be broken or unbroken, and which may be straight, curved or zig- zagged.
Suitably, the second line comprises a cut, preferably a single cut, which may be substantially straight.
Preferably, the first and second lines each comprise cuts.
The, first and second lines may each comprise a single cut. The first and second lines may be distinct.
Preferably, the first and second lines are connected. The first and second lines may thus comprise a single cut.
The first arid second lines may intersect. Alternatively, the first and second lines may comprise sections, suitably end sections, which suitably are straight, of a single line which includes a transition section, preferably a curved section, connecting said first and second line sections. The first and second lines may thus be integral.
Suitably, the opening means comprises a first line section, suitably an end section, which may be straight, from which a tear develops in use and a second line section, suitably an end section, which may be straight, from which a further tear develops in use and which line sections are distinct from one another. The line sections may though be both distinct and joined to one another.
Said first and second line sections, suitably end sections, may lie at an angle to one another.
Alternatively or in addition, said first and second line sections, suitably end sections, may be interposed by a transition line section which suitably lies at an angle thereto.
Suitably, the first line has a section from which a tear develops in use, preferably an end section, which suitably is straight, which lies at an angle relative to a section from which a further tear develops in use, preferably an end section, which suitably is straight, of the second line.
Preferably, said section of the second line extends at an angle of between 30 and 150 degrees, more preferably 60 and 120 degrees, relative to said section of the first - ii.
line, preferably at an angle of between 75 and 105 degrees.
Suitably, said section of the first line extends in said first direction and said section of said second line extends in said second direction.
The opening means may comprise more than one first line, for example two first lines.
The opening means may comprise more than one econd line, for example two second lines.
Suitably, the opening means is generally symmetrical about an axis extending generally perpendicular to the boundary line. This may improve the consistency of the opening of like packaging.
Suitably, the opening means comprises a single cut. Said cut may provide one or more first lines and one or more second lines. Said cut may comprise one or more first line sections and one or more second line sections and these may be connected by a transition line section.
Suitably, said first direction extends generally parallel to the boundary line.
The first line of weakness or cut(s) may thus extend generally parallel to the boundary line. Suitably, the first line of weakness or cut(s) lies generally equidistant from the boundary line.
The term "first direction extends generally parallel" as used herein is meant to have a broad meaning and encompasses a first direction which extends at an angle of +1- 30 degrees relative to the direction of the boundary line.
Preferably, the first direction extends at an angle of between +1-15 degrees relative to the direction of the boundary line. Thue, the first line preferably does not form an angle of greater than +1- 15 degrees with the boundary line.
By "first direction" it is meant the general end to end direction of the first line rather than the direction of the line at any particular point thereof unless otherwise described.
By "direction of the boundary line" it is meant the general end to end direction of the boundary line rather than the direction of the boundary line at any particular point thereof unless otherwise described.
Suitably, said second direction extends generally perpendicular to the boundary line.
The second line of weakness or cut(s) may thus extend generally perpendicular to the boundary line. Suitably, the second line of weakness or cut(s) lies generally equidistant from opposed sides of the wrapper.
The term "second direction extends generally perpendicular" as used herein is meant to have a broad meaning and encompasses a second direction which extends from the boundary line towards the tablet. Generally the second direction extends at an angle of between 30 and 150 degrees, more preferably 60 and 120 degrees relative to the direction of the boundary line.
Preferably, the second direction extends at an angle of between 75 and 105 degrees relative to the direction of the boundary line.
By "second direction" it is meant the general end to end direction of the second line rather than the direction of the line at any particular point thereof unless otherwise described.
Preferably, the second direction extends at an angle of between 30 and 150 degrees, more preferably 60 and 120 degrees, relative to the first direction, preferably at an angle of between 75 and 105 degrees. The second line may thus extend generally perpendicular relative to the first line.
The first and second lines may form a "T" shape with the first line forming the arms of the "1" and the second line forming the stem of the "1". Suitably, the 1" is orientated such that the stem extends towards the boundary line.
Suitably, the opening means comprises cut lines. The opening means may comprise a "T" shaped cut comprising the first and second lines.
The arms of the "1" may be slightly angled relative to one another such that the cut has a partially "Y" shaped form.
The cut may thus comprise two first lines (the arms) and one second line (the stem) Alternatively, the arms of the "T" may be substantially parallel at their ends but may curve downwardly to join the stem such that the cut has more of a curved "V" shaped form. The cut may thus comprise two first line sections (the arm ends) and one second line section (the stem) connected by transition sections (the curved parts of the arms).
Alternatively, the cut may be "V" shaped.
Alternatively, the cut may be in the shape of extended "Y" or an extended "1". Such an extended cut may be such that one or both arms have an extension section meeting the arm at an angle to the arm. The or each extension section may be substantially parallel to the second direction. The or each extension section may be substantially parallel to the stem. Suitably, the or each extension section extends away from the stem such that the or each arm having an extension section has an upturned end. Suitably, the or each extension section is arranged to extend towards an edge of the wrapper.
Where the opening means comprises such an extension section, the extension section may provide a first line section and the arm may provide a transition line section and the transition line section may extend in the first direction and the first line section may extend in the second direction.
Alternatively, the cut may comprise two second lines which join to form a "V11 shape. The free ends of the V may each curve around to form a first line. The cut may thus generally correspond to the curved "Y" shaped cut absent the stem. Alternatively, the free ends of the "V" may each be joined to a first line which forms an elbow with the "V" to form an arrow head shaped cut.
Alternatively, the cut may comprise two converging second lines in "V'1 configuration but which do not meet to form the base of the "V". These lines may be j.oined to a single first line to form a dovetail shaped cut.
Alternatively, the cut may comprise a second line which intersects the first line. The, second line may thus extend from the first line both towards the boundary line and the first edge of the wrapper.
Suitably, the wrapper comprises a front face, rear face, first and second opposed sides and first and second opposed ends.
Suitably, the wrapper comprises a longitudinal seam extending in an end to end direction of the wrapper and transverse seams extending in a side to side direction at the ends of the wrapper to provide seals to the first portion.
Suitably, the wrapper comprises a longitudinally extending flap which includes or borders the longitudinal seam.
Suitably, the wrapper comprises a folded sheet. Suitably, the wrapper comprises a longitudinally extending flap at which the sheet is sealed to itself to form a tube.
Suitably, the second portion comprises, a longitudinally extending flap of the wrapper. The second portion may thus comprise the longitudinal seam.
Suitably, the wrapper comprises a folded sheet and the second portion Comprises a longitudinally extending flap comprising a longitudinal seam at which the sheet is sealed to itself. Suitably, the entirety of the flap may comprise a seam. Suitably, the opening means is located within a seam part of the wrapper.
Suitably, the boundary line comprises the longitudinal seam of the wrapper. The boundary line may thus extend in an end to end direction of the wrapper. Suitably, an edge of the longitudinal seam which borders the first portion comprises the boundary line.
A first line of the opening means may extend in an end to end direction of the wrapper. A second line of the opening means may extend in a side to side direction of the wrapper.
Alternatively, the second portion of the wrapper may comprise one of said ends, for example said first end.
The boundary line may comprise a transverse seam of the wrapper. The boundary line may thus extend in a side to side direction of the wrapper.
A first line of the opening means may extend in a side to side direction of the wrapper. A second line of the opening means may extend in an end to end direction of the wrapper.
Suitably, the wrapper comprises substantially smooth edges. Suitably, the ends and longitudinal flap of the wrapper do not have serrated edges. Suitably, the perimeter edges of the wrapper are formed by single line io cuts. Suitably, the perimeter edges of the wrapper are formed by straight cuts. It may thus be difficult to tear into the wrapper from an edge. This may make it difficult for children to access the contents of the packaging.
Suitably, the wrapper comprises no apertures additional to cuts of the opening means. Preferably, the first and second holding parts do not comprise apertures. it may thus be very hard to grip the holding parts and pull them apart without first removing the bridge. This may make it difficult for children to access the contents of the packaging.
Suitably, the first portion of the wrapper is substantially waterimpermeable. The packaging suitably comprises a plastics or foil sheet forming the wrapper.
Preferably, the wrapper comprises a plastics coated foil sheet (e.g. a metallised plastics foil).
Suitably, the packaging comprises a wrapper formed by folding a plastics sheet and sealing the edges thereof to enclose a cleaning tablet.

The term "cleaning composition" is understood in the broad sense in the present application, namely as comprising all those substances and mixtures of substances which can be used in connection with cleaning processes. These include not only the compositions which are actually active in cleaning, such as detergents, for example dishwasher detergents, and washing substances, but all compositions which support cleaning functions concerned, such as water softeners, or which have the effect of providing protective care, such as fabric treaters or final rinses.
Included in the term "cleaning composition" are mixtures of ingredients selected from: surfactant, builder, filler, bleach (optionally containing also bleach activator and/or a bleach catalyst) water-softening composition and enzymes. The cleaning composition may contain other minor ingredients such as dye, fragrance and optical brighteners.
By use of the term "water-softening composition" we mean a mixture of a water-softening active(s) with other compounds selected from those mentioned in the previous
paragraph, or elsewhere in this specification.
Suitably, the cleaning composition comprises a detergent composition. The cleaning composition may comprise a detergent composition together with other components which support a cleaning function. Alternatively, the cleaning composition may consist essentially of a detergent composition.
As used herein the term "detergent composition" is understood to comprise all those substances and mixtures of substances which are active in cleaning, such as detergents and washing substances.
Included in the term "detergent composition" are mixtures of ingredients selected from: surfactant, builder, filler, bleach (optionally containing also bleach activator and/or a bleach catalyst) and enzymes.
The detergent composition may be substantially free of compositions which support cleaning functions, such as water-gofteners, or which have the effect of providing protective care, such as fabric softeners or final rinses S (rinse aids).

Suitably, to wash a load which substantially corresponds to a full load of a ware washing machine, and which load has a normal level of soiling, the method will use N tablets. Suitably, the packaged product comprises N like tablets. Suitably, N is 2.
Suitably, for a load having a heavy level of soiling and which load substantially corresponds to a full load of a ware washing machine the dose will be N + A tablets.
Suitably, for a load having a light level of soiling and which load substantially corresponds to a full load of a ware washing machine the dose will be N - B tablets.
Suitably, for a load having a normal level of soiling and which load substantially corresponds to a half load of a ware washing machine the dose will be N - C tablets.
Suitably, the instructions include values for N, A, B and C. According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of opening a packaged product according to the second aspect, the method comprising first pulling parts of the packaging in opposed directions extending transverse to the boundary line and secondly pulling parts of the packaging in opposed directions extending transverse to said directions of the first stage.
Suitably, to open the packaging a user first holds the first portion and the bridge of the second portion and pulls the first and second portions in generally opposed directions to cause the bridge to break and/or detach from at least one holding part.
Suitably, with the bridge broken and/or detached from one or both holding parts a user pulls the first and second holding parts in generally opposed directions such that a tear in the wrapper is caused to develop and spread from the opening means towards the boundary line.
The method may comprise any feature as described in relation to the first or second aspect.
The present invention will now be illustrated by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a packaged product showing hidden detail; Figure 2A is a plan view of the packaged product of Figure 1. in a closed configuration; Figure 2B is a plan view of the packaged product of Figure 2A after a first stage of an opening operation; Figure 2C is a plan view of the packaged product of Figure 2A after a second stage of an opening operation; Figure 3 is a perspective view of an alternative embodiment of a packaged product; Figures 4a to 4f are plan views of alternative embodiments of a packaged product; and Figures 5a to 5f show the tear points of the embodiments of Figures 4a to 4f.
Figure 1 illustrates a packet (packaging) 1 loaded with two tablets 3 (shown in dotted outline). The packet 1 comprises a plastics coated foil sheet 5 which is folded and sealed along a longitudinal seam (omitted for clarity) and two end seams 7, 9 to form a wrapper 10.
The tablets 3 each have a length of around 26mm, a width of around 18mm and a thickness of around 11mm.
The wrapper 10 has first and second ends 11, 13 and first and second sides 15, 17. The wrapper 10 comprises a first portion 19 enclosing the tablets 3 and a second portion 21 conjoined thereto bearing opening means 23.
The second portion 21 is separated from the first portion 19 by a boundary line 25 which comprises an edge of the seam 7 such that the boundary line 25 comprises a seal closing the first portion 19.
The second portion 21 comprises the first end 11 of the wrapper 10 and is provided with a "T" shaped cut which provides the opening means 23.
The arms of the "T" comprise a first cut line 27 which extends in a side to side 15, 17 direction of the wrapper generally parallel to the boundary line 25. The stem of the IT" comprises a second cut line 29 which extends in an end to end 11, 13 direction of the wrapper generally perpendicular to the boundary line 25.
The second portion comprises first and second holding parts 35, 37 on opposed sides of the iT" shaped cut. A bridge 39 connects the holding parts on a side of the "1" shaped cut opposed to the boundary line 25 (an outward side"). The bridge 39 restricts the holding parts 35, 37 from being pulled apart to open the wrapper until the bridge 39 is first detached.
Figures 2A-2C illustrate the opening of the packet 1.
First, as shown by Figure 2A a user holds the wrapper by the wrappers first and second ends 11, 13 such that the 3].
second portion 21 is held (by the bridge 39) on a side of the first cut line 27 opposed to the boundary line 25 (an "outward side"). The user then pulls the opposed ends 11, 13 in opposed directions as illustrated by arrows A and B. As illustrated by Figure 2B this causes tears to develop at the ends of the first cut line 27 such that a part 31 of the outward side of the second portion (comprising bridge 39)is torn away from the remainder of the wrapper 10. This creates a new end edge 33 of the wrapper which includes the first cut line 27 such that the second cut line 29 now extends from the edge 33 of the wrapper 10.
A user can thus pull sides 15, 17 (comprising holding parts 35, 37) of the second portion lying either side of the second cut line 29 in opposed directions illustrated by arrows C and D to open up the cut. This causes a tear to develop at the end of the cut line 29 adjacent the boundary line 25. Continued pulling of the opposed side parts (comprising holding parts 35, 37) of the second portion 21 causes the tear to extend across the boundary line 25. This results in the breach the closure of the first portion 19 as illustrated by Figure 2C. Thus a tablet held within the first portion 19 can be accessed.
Figures 3 illustrates an alternative embodiments of packet (packaging) 101. The construction is substantially the same as that of the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2 with the distinction that the second portion 121 comprises a longitudinal flap 141 rather than an end of the wrapper 110. The form of the opening means 123 also varies to that of Figures 1 to 2. The packet 101 comprises a two part wrapper strip with each part 111, 112 loaded with one
tablet (not shown).
The tablets each have a length of around 24m, a width of around 16mm and a thickness of around 13mm.
The packet 101 comprises a plastics coated foil sheet 105 which is folded and sealed along a longitudinal seam 143 comprising the flap 141 and two end seams 107, 109 to form a wrapper 110. The wrapper is divided into two parts by a transverse seal 108. The perimeter edges of. the wrapper are smooth such that they do not provide a tear starting point, unlike a serrated edge.
The wrapper 110 has first and second ends 111, 113 and first and second sides 115, 117. The wrapper 110 comprises two first portions 119 each enclosing a tablet 3 and two second portion 121 conjoined thereto bearing opening means 123.
The sheet 105 is folded and sealed such that it has first portions 119 for enclosing tablets and second portions 121 which comprise overlapping parts of the sheet 105. The overlapping parts of the sheet 105 which provide the second portion 121 are sealed to one another to form the flap 141 which comprises seam 143. The opening means 123 is thus provided in a seam part of the wrapper 110.
The second portion 12]. is separated from the first portion 119 by a boundary line 125 which comprises an edge of the seam 143 and the seam 143 thus comprises a seal closing the first portion 119.
Each second portion 121 comprises a cut which provides the opening means 123. This cut is part "1" and part "V" shaped. It comprises arms which are substantially parallel at their ends but curve downwardly to join the stem such that the cut generally has a curved "Y" shaped form. The cut thus comprises two first line sections 127a, 127b (the arm ends) and one second line section 129(the stem) connected by transition sections (the curved parts of the arms).
The first line sections 127a, 127b extend generally parallel to the boundary line 125 and the second line section 129 extends generally perpendicular to the boundary line 125.
Each second portion comprises first and second holding parts 135, 137 on opposed sides of the cut. A bridge 139 connects the holding parts on a side of the cut opposed to the boundary line 125 (an "outward side"). The bridge 139 restricts the holding parts 135, 137 from being pulled apart to open the wrapper until the bridge 139 is first detached.
The opening of the wrapper is substantially as described in relation to the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2. The second portion 121 of a part 111 or 112 of the packet 101 is held by the bridge 139 and the first and second portions 119, 121 are pulled in opposed directions to cause tears to spread from line sections 127a, 127b such that the bridge 139 tears away from the holding parts 135, 137. The holding parts 135, 137 are then pulled in opposed directions to cause a tear to spread through the seam 143 from line section 129 to cross the boundary line and breach the seal of the first portion 119. In this way a tablet can be accessed. The process can then be repeated for the other part 111 or 112 of the packet 101.
Figures 4 and 5 illustrate alternative embodiments of packets (packaging) 101. Their construction is substantially the same as that of the embodiment of Figures 3 with the distinction that each comprise a one part wrapper having a single first portion 119 loaded with a single tablet (not shown) and a single second portion 121. Again, the second portion 121 comprises a longitudinal flap 141. The form of the opening means 123 also varies to that of Figure 3.
The main distinction between the wrappers is the form of the opening means 123. However, they share the same core features and like parts are labelled accordingly. For clarity only the features of the second portion are labelled in detail.
The second portion 121 is separated from the first portion 119 by a boundary line 125 which comprises the edge of a seam 143 sealing the first portion 119.
The second portion 121 comprises a flap 141 comprising seam 143 and bearing opening means 123 which comprises a single cut. First and second holding parts 135, 137 lie on opposed sides of the opening means 123. A bridge 139 connects the first and second holding parts 135, 137.
The packet 101 illustrated by Figure 4a is substantially the same as that of Figure 3 and differs only in that the packet is a one part packet. The cut of the opening means 123 comprises first line sections 127a and a second line section 129 connected by transition sections.
The packet 101 illustrated by Figure 4b comprises an opening means 123 comprising a T" shaped cut corresponding generally to that of Figures 1 and 2 with the distinction being that it is provided on a longitudinal flap 141 of the packet 101. The cut comprises a first line 127 (the arms) and a second connected line 129 (the stem).
The packet 101 illustrated by Figure 4c comprises an opening means 123 comprising a "1" shaped cut in which. the arms of the "T" are slightly angled relative to one another such that the cut has a part'ially Y" shaped form.
The cut thus comprise two first lines 127a, 127b (the arms) and a second connected line 129 (the stem).
The packet 101 illustrated by Figure 4d comprises an opening means 123 comprising an arrow head shaped cut.
The cut comprises two second lines 129a, 129b which join to form a "v" shape. The free ends of the "V" are each joined to a first line 127a, 127b which forms an elbow with the "V".
The packet 101 illustrated by Figure 4e comprises an opening means 123 comprising a dove tail shaped cut. The cut comprises two converging second lines 129a, 129b in "V" configuration but which do not meet to form the base of the "V". These lines are joined to a single first line 129 which connects their divergent ends.
The packet 101 illustrated by Figure 4f comprises an opening means 123 Comprising an extended "T" shaped cut in which the arms of the "1" are slightly angled relative to one another such that the cut has a partially "Y" shaped S form. The extension provide upturns at the ends of the arms. The cut thus comprises two first lines which each comprise two sections, the arms 127a, 127b and the extensions 128a, 128b, and a second line 129 (the stem).
The arms 127a, 12Th provide a transition section between the stem 129 and the extensions 128a, 128b which lie substantially parallel to the stem.
The opening of the packets 101 of Figures 4a-4f is generally as described in relation to Figure 3. Figures 5a-5f illustrate the paths of tears 151 (shown by dotted lines) which start at the opening means 123 and detach the bridge 139 from the first and second holding parts 135, 137 as the bridge 139 and first portion 119 are pulled in opposed directions. Also illustrated are the paths of tears 153 (shown by dotted lines) which start at the opening means 123 arid cross the boundary line 125 to breach the seal of the first portion when the first and second holding parts 135, 137 are pulled in opposed directions following detachment of the bridge 139. In the case the embodiment of Figure Se the tear may follow path 153a or 153b.
It is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to the details of the foregoing embodiment(s).
The invention extends to any novel one, or any novel combination, of the features disclosed in this
specification, or to any novel one, or any novel
combination, of the steps of any method or process so disclosed.
