Abstract

A clamp 1 comprising a threaded bolt 2 carrying a first clamping body 3 and a second clamping body 4. The first clamping body 3 is threaded on a first section 5 of the threaded bolt 2 and the second clamping body 4 is threaded on a second section 7 of the threaded bolt. The first and second sections comprise threads 6, 8 with directions that are opposite to each other. Rotation of the threaded bolt 2 in relation to the first clamping body 3 and the second clamping body 4 moves the first and second clamping bodies towards each other. A nut member 9 may be provided between the two sections for rotation of the bolt. The first 3 and second clamping members 4 may each comprise two wing plates and a back plate to form an arrowhead shape, which may taper towards the nut member 9. The clamp may be used to connect two sections of worktop 16, 17.

Description

Connecting Clamp This invention relates to a connecting clamp for use
particularly, but not exclusively to connect kitchen work tops together Modern kitchens can comprise a number of cupboard units upon which is mounted a work top surface. The work top surface may require two or more sections which need to be fixed together, for example at a corner.
The conventional method of fixing such sections of work top together comprises forming bulb-shaped troughs in the underside of each of the sections, and using connecting clamps to pull the troughs together. The troughs comprise a neck section extending from an edge of the work top section and a clamping member section with a greater width at the inner end of said neck section. The connecting clamps comprise a nut and bolt, and two arcuate clamping bodies. The clamping bodies are mounted on the bolt, and placed in contact with the walls of the clamping member sections of the troughs, with the bolt extending trough the neck sections.
The sections of work top are attached together by tightening the nut on the bolt.
However, these arrangements suffer from a number of drawbacks.
The biggest problem is accessing the nut to tighten it. The work top sections are attached together while placed in their final position, so the clamping member sections of the troughs may overlie a section of cupboard unit the work top is resting on. As a result, the cupboards carl be provided with apertures to allow access. The apertures may need to be formed on site. A spanner or other toot is then used to tighten the nut from underneath. It can be a very awkward exercise as the workman has to climb inside the cupboard, and the space around the nut can be very limited. It can take more than an hour to attach two work top surfaces together in this manner.
Another problem is that the material of the work top sections can fail when the connecting clamps are tightened. All the connecting force is applied directly to the portion of material around the neck section, which is intrinsically weak. As a result it is easily compressed, and can tear away from the surrounding material.
The present invention is intended to overcome some of the above problems.
Therefore, according to the present invention a connecting clamp comprises a threaded bolt carrying a first clamping body and a second clamping body, in which the first clamping body is threaded on a first section of the threaded bolt which has a thread of a first direction, and the second clamping body is threaded on a second section of the threaded bolt which has a thread of a second direction which is opposite to the first direction, such that rotation of the threaded bolt in relation to the first clamping body and the second clamping body moves the first clamping body and the second clamping body towards each other.
With this arrangement the threaded bolt only needs to be rotated half as much as with known constructions, as both clamping bodies are moved with rotation of the bolt.
In a preferred construction the threaded bolt can comprise said first section, said second section and a nut member mounted axially between said sections for rotation of the threaded bolt in use. The nut member allows the threaded bolt to be rotated conveniently from the centre, and not from its ends.
The clamping bodies can be any shape which can engage with the walls of a trough or internal compartment of the items to be joined together. However, in a preferred construction each clamping body can comprise two wing plates, each arranged at an angle to the threaded bolt, such that an arrow head shape is formed which tapers towards the nut member.
This shape is preferred when the invention is used to connect two kitchen work tops together as described above. The arrow head shape means that the linear force pulling the work tops together is converted into a more oblique force applied to the walls of the clamping member trough. This reduces the instance of failure of the work top as less of the force applied acts directly against the narrow portion of the work top between the clamping member trough and the edge.
A threaded bore can be provided between the two wing plates, which threaded bore is mounted on the threaded bolt. In addition, in a preferred construction a back plate can extend between outer ends of the wing members and can be orthogonal to the threaded bolt. The back plate can be provided with a threaded bore which is also mounted on the threaded bolt. With this arrangement the clamping member can have twice the thread mounted on the threaded bolt, which reduces the changes of stripping that thread in use.
A connection means can be provided at each end of the threaded bolt for rotation thereof in use. This connection means can be a slot for a screw driver head, a head for a socket or any other similar means. This allows the threaded bolt to be rotated from either end if preferred in use.
The nut member can be provided with bores such that it can be rotated not only by a spanner, but also by inserting a narrow tool, such as an Allen key or the like, into the bores.
The invention also includes a method of using the connecting clamp as described above.
Therefore, according to a second aspect of the present invention a method of using a connecting clamp to connect two sectiorls of work top together, in which the connecting clamp comprises a threaded bolt carrying a first clamping body and a second clamping body, in which the first clamping body is threaded on a first section of the threaded bolt which has a thread of a first direction, and the second clamping body is threaded on a second section of the threaded bolt which has a thread of a second direction which is opposite to the first direction, such that rotation of the threaded boit in relation to the first clamping body and the second clamping body moves the first clamping body and the second clamping body towards each other, in which the threaded bolt comprises said first section, said second section and a nut member mounted axially between said sections, and in which a connection nieans is provided at each end of the threaded bolt, includes the following steps: 1) Forming a trough in the underside of each of the two sections of work top to be joined together, said troughs comprising a neck section extending from an edge of the work top and a clamping member section with a greater width at the inner end of said neck section, and said troughs being aligned when the two sections of work top are aligned for attachment 2) Placing the connecting clamp into the troughs with the first clamping body in a first of the clamping member sections, with the second clamping body in a second of the clamping member sections, and with the threaded bolt disposed in the neck sections 3) Rotating the threaded bolt by means of the nut member and/or either of the connection means, such that the first clamping member and the second clamping member are moved towards one another until the two work top sections are attached together.
The invention can be performed in various ways but one embodiment will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a view from below of a connecting clamp in a first in use arrangement; Figure 2 is a cross-sectional side view of the connecting clamp as shown in Figure 1; and, Figure 3 is a view from below of the connecting clamp shown in Figure 1 in a second in use arrangement.
As shown in Figure 1 a connecting clamp 1 comprises a threaded bolt 2 carrying a first clamping body 3 (shown in cross-section in Figures 1 and 3) and a second clamping body 4. The first clamping body 3 is threaded on a first section 5 of the threaded bolt 2 which has a thread 6 of a first direction, and the second clamping body 4 is threaded on a second section 7 of the threaded bolt 2 which has a thread 8 of a second direction, which is opposite to the first direction, such that rotation of the threaded bolt 2 in relation to the first clamping body 3 and the second clamping body 4 moves the first clamping body 3 and the second clamping body 4 towards each other, as explained below.
The threaded bolt 2 also comprises a nut member 9 mounted axially between the first section 5 and the second section 7. The nut member 9 is an elongate component with a axial cross-section in the shape of a six sided nut. The nut member is also provided with a number of bores 9a, which pass through it, such that it can be rotated not only by a spanner, but also by inserting a narrow tool into the bores.
The clamping bodies 3 and 4 each comprise two wing plates 10 and 11 which are arranged at an angle to the threaded bolt 2 such that an arrow head shape is formed which tapers towards the nut member 9, as is clear from Figure 1. A threaded bore 12 (visible in clamping body 3 in Figure 1, and in both clamping bodies in Figure 2)is prov;ded between the two wing plates 10 and 11. The threaded bores 12 are mounted on the threaded bolt 2.
Back plates 13 extends between outer ends of the wing members 10 and 11 and are orthogonal to the threaded bolt 2. The back plates 13 are provided with a threaded bore 14 (visible in clamping body 3 in Figure 1, and in both clamping bodies in Figure 2) which are mounted on the threaded bolt 2.
A slot 15 is provided at each end of the threaded bolt 2, which is for cooperation with a rotational tool.
In use the connecting clamp 1 is used to connect two sections of kitchen work top 16 and 17 together. In each section 16 and 17 a trough 18 has been created in the underside 19 to receive the connecting clamp 1. The troughs 18 are created with a template and a known routing tool. The troughs 18 comprise a neck section 20, and a clamping member section 21 with a greater width than the neck section 20.
The troughs 18 are formed such that they are aligned as shown in the Figures when the two sections of work top 16 and 17 are aligned for attachment.
The troughs are approximately 1.5cm to 2cm deep, and as shown in Figure 2, they are deep enough contain the clamping bodies 3 and 4 such that they do not extend below said underside surface 19.
The connecting clamp 1 is placed inside the troughs 18 as shown in Figures 1 and 2, with the clamping bodies 3 and 4 in the clamping member sections 21 and with the threaded bolt 2 disposed in the neck sections 20.
The threaded bolt 2 is then rotated to pull the two sections of work top 16 and 17 together. Initially the threaded bolt 2 can be turned by hand until the clamping bodies 3 and 4 engage the walls of the clamping member sections 21, as shown in Figure 3.
From that point a greater rotational force is required to attach the two sections of work top 16 and 17 together, and this can be provided by applying a spanner to the nut member 9, by applying a narrow tool such as an Allen key or the like to the bores 9a, or by applying an appropriate screw head to either of the slots at the ends of the threaded bolt 2.
A screw head at the end of a flexible rotating cable, or attached to a universal joint, can be used to rotate the bolt 2 by the slots 15. This avoids the need to access the slots directly from below, which can he awkward. It also allows for the work top sections 16 and 17 to be lifted slightly from cupboard units (not shown) upon which they are to rest, and for a flexible rotating cable to be fed through the gap directly to the slots 15.
It will be appreciated that there may be only limited access to both the nut 9 and the slots 15, and the user can therefore use whichever of the three points is the most convenient.
It will also be appreciated that when the threaded bolt 2 is rotated, both the clamping body 3 and the clamping body 4 are moved towards the nut 9, due to the opposite direction of the threads. Therefore, only half the rotation required for known devices is needed here.
As is shown in Figure 3, the arrow head shape of the wing members 10 and 11 converts the linear force pulling the clamping members 3 and 4 together, into an oblique force applied to the walls of the clamping member section 21. Therefore, instead of the linear force being applied directly against the narrowest and weakest section of the material of the work top sections 16 and 17 which surrounds the neck sections 20 of the troughs 18, the linear force is applied in the direction of arrows A. In use the material of the work top sections 16 and 17 is compressed slightly by the clamping members, as is clear from Figure 3.
It should also be noted that the presence of both threaded apertures 12 and 14 in the clamping members 3 and 4 spreads the load applied to the thread in use, so the thread is less likely to be stripped.
Thus a connecting clamp is provided which requires half the rotation of known devices to clamp two work top sections together, which can be rotated from three different points, and which directs the clamping force away from the weakest part of the material being clamped together.

Claims (9)

  1. Claims 1. A connecting clamp comprising a threaded bolt carrying a first
    clamping body and a second clamping body, in which the first clamping body is threaded on a first section of the threaded bolt which has a thread of a first direction, and the second clamping body is threaded on a second section of the threaded bolt which has a thread of a second direction which is opposite to the first direction, such that rotation of the threaded bolt in relation to the first clamping body and the second clamping body moves the first clamping body and the second clamping body towards each other.
  2. 2. A connecting clamp as claimed in Claim 1 in which the threaded bolt comprises said first section, said second section and a nut member mounted axially between said sections for rotation of the threaded bolt in use.
  3. 3. A connecting clamp as claimed in Claim 2 in which the first clamping body and the second clamping body each comprise two wing plates, each arranged at an angle to the threaded bolt, such that an arrow head shape is formed which tapers towards the nut member.
  4. 4. A connecting clamp as claimed in Claim 3 in which a threaded bore is provided between the two wing plates, which threaded bore is mounted on the threaded bolt.
  5. 5. A connecting clamp as claimed in Claim 4 in which a back plate extends between outer ends of the wing members and is orthogonal to the threaded bolt, and in which said back plate is provided with a threaded bore which is mounted on the threaded bolt.
  6. 6. A connecting clamp as claimed in any of the previous Claims in which a connection means is provided at each end of the threaded bolt for rotation thereof in use.
  7. 7. A connecting clamp substantially as described herein and as shown in the accompanying Figures.
  8. 8. A method of using a connecting clamp to connect two sections of work top together, in which the connecting clamp comprises a threaded bolt carrying a first clamping body and a second clamping body, in which the first clamping body is threaded on a first section of the threaded bolt which has a thread of a first direction, and the second clamping body is threaded on a second section of the threaded bolt which has a thread of a second direction which is opposite to the first direction, such that rotation of the threaded bolt in relation to the first clamping body and the second clamping body moves the first clamping body and the second clamping body towards each other, in which the threaded bolt comprises said first section, said second section and a nut member mounted axially between said sections, and in which a connection means is provided at each end of the threaded bolt, including the following steps: 1) Forming a trough in the underside of each of the two sections of work top to be joined together, said troughs comprising a neck section extending from an edge of the work top and a clamping member section with a greater width at the inner end of said neck section, and said troughs being aligned when the two sections of work top are aligned for attachment 2) Placing the connecting clamp into the troughs with the first clamping body in a first of the clamping member sections, with the second clamping body in a second of the clamping member sections, and with the threaded bolt disposed in the neck sections 3) Rotating the threaded bolt by means of the nut member and/or either of the connection means, such that the first clamping member and the second clamping member are moved towards one another until the two work top sections are attached together.
  9. 9. A niethod of using a connecting clamp substantially as described herein.
