Abstract

The clip connects a mainline 3 to a hooklength 1 and comprises a substantially cylindrical barrel with a passage 4 extending substantially along the longitudinal axis of the barrel and means for co-operating with an end 6 of the mainline, and a swivel member 2 adapted to be releasably retained by the barrel and including attachment means for attaching the hooklength and engagement means for engagement with the mainline. In the event of breakage of the mainline, the swivel member may release from the barrel and the mainline may disengage with the swivel member.

Description

Patent application: Carp Safety Weight Clip Large freshwater fish such as
carp. will often snap the fishing line wen hooked. This is a significant problem for fisheries, as the fish will trail a length of line often 10 or 20 m in length and can easily become tethered if the line is snagged on an obstacle such as a tree root, reeds etc. this usually results in the death of the fish.
This inention is designed to give the fish a reasonable chance of escaping from the trailing line Fishermen will normally use a short hooklength attached to a swivel or ring. The hookkngth is shown in Fig. 1, 1 and the swivel in Fig.l.2. The mainline from the rod/reel end, shown in Fig. is passed through a hole in the barrel of the safety clip as shown in Fig. 1,4. The line then passes through the loop in the swivel and back through the barrel and out of a hole in the side, see Fig. 1,5.
It is attached to a loop of metal or plastic as shown in Fig. 1.6 which is passed over the end of the plastic clip. securing the hook length. If a fish snaps the mainline, the clip with lead weight attached is dragged around and it is likely that the weight will become lodged between roots, stones, see Fig .7. The fish can now pull the swivel free from the clip housing, see Fig. 2,2. The broken section oF mainline is pulled through the safety clip until the end passes through the swivel eye. releasing the hook length, as shown in Fig 3. The fish is left with only the hook length in its mouth. which is much less likely to become snagged. See Fig. 4.
lhe hole passing through the barrel that holds the swivel, is shown in Fig. 5. 8. The step or reduction in diameter shown in Fig. 5, 9. is to trap the swivel and prevent it from sliding right through the barrel. The hole in the side of the barrel, through which the mainline passes is shon in Fig. 5. 5. Fig. 6,5 is an alternate view of the hole that passes through the side of the halTel and connects with the main hole that holds the swivel. The ring to w'hich the main line is attached is shown in Fig 6.6 and the main line is shown passing down through the hole in Fig 6. 3. AlLeiiiatrc designs of this invention are shown in Fig 7.10. with a plastic ioop as part of the main salty clip body to attach the line to and Fig. 8. 11, that shows a loop on the mainline that passes O's'Cf the end oithc barrel. Fig. 9,12 shows the loop on the end of the line passing over a thin plastic projection Irufli the side of the clip.

Claims (5)

  1. Claims: 1. A fishing clip for connecting a mainline to a hook!ength,
comprising: a substantially cylindrical barrel with a passage extending substantially along the longitudinal axis of the barrel and means for co-operating with an end of the mainline, and a swivel member adapted to be releasably retained by the barrel and including attachment means for attaching the hooklength and engagement means for engagement with the mainline, the arrangement being such that in a casting position, the swivel member is retained by the barrel, the end of the mainline co-operates with the co- operating means, and the length of the mainline then engages with the engagement means, wherein in the event of breakage of the mainline, the swivel member may release from the barrel and the mainline may disengage with the swivel member.
  2. 2. A clip according to Claim 1, wherein the passage comprises a first portion sized to accommodate the mainline and a second portion sized to accommodate the swivel member, the first portion being of smaller diameter than the second portion.
  3. 3. A clip according to Claim 2, wherein in the casting position, a section of mainline runs through the first portion to the second portion, where it engages with the engagement means.
  4. 4. A clip according to any preceding claim, comprising an aperture in the barrel between the passage and the exterior of the barrel, such that the mainline may pass through the aperture between the co-operating means and the engagement means.
  5. 5. A clip substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying figures.
