Abstract

242,570. Dear, V. N. Aug. 10, 1925. Lubricant conveyed by m e c h a n i c a l means.-The journal 1 of a vehicle axle is lubricated by a, member 20 which is caused alternatively to dip into oil in the axlebox and to rise into contact with the journal, the member being maintained in contact with the journal during several revolutions of the latter and being allowed to pause when in the oil, the rise and fall being relatively rapid. The member 20 is carried bv arms 19 fixed to a shaft 16 which is oscillated by the engagement of a roller 18 on an arm 15 with a cam 14 carried by a ratchet wheel 11 operated by a pivoted pawl lever 7, 10 actuated by a rod 5 from an eccentric 3 on the end of the journal 1. The arms 19 may be flexible, or the roller 18 may be spring mounted. Alternatively, the pawl lever may be adapted to be actuated by a projection 29 on the end flange of the journal. The member 20 is in the form of a hollow cylinder which rotates on a spindle 21 when in contact with the journal. Oil enters the interior of the cylinder, which may be filled with absorbent material, through holes 24 in its end walls, and, during the rotation of the cylinder, flows through perforations 26 to a covering 27 of felt or the like.
