Abstract

242,547. Oels, R. C. G. Staats-. June 4, 1925. Fluid - friction vibrationdampers ; pneumatic springs. -Relates to apparatus in which a plurality of cylinders telescope into one another, air being compressed in each cylinder on one stroke and the flow being restricted on the other by valves. The smallest and largest cylinders 14, 16 are connected to the axle and frame of a vehicle, and flow of air between all the cylinders and the atmosphere is controlled by a central tubular sleeve 25 fixed to the largest cylinder 16 and a tube 26 slidable on the sleeve 25 within the limits set by a pin-and-slot connection 31, the valve thus formed being opened and closed by the first part of the outward and inward movements respectively of the cylinders. The sleeve and tube are perforated, the perforations coinciding when the apparatus is extending to allow free entrance of air but closing when the apparatus is contracting so that air is compressed in the cylinders. The tube 26 works in a bush 29 in the plunger of the smallest cylinder, the friction between the tube and bush being greater than that between the tube and sleeve. The degree of air compression in the cylinders may be varied by slightly varying the position of the perforations so that they are not moved entirely out of registry at any time.
