Abstract

A heating apparatus comprising a flexible heat generating element in the form of an open mesh with an embedded or integral electrical power delivery element arranged thereon. Power supplied to the electrical power delivery element activates the heat generating element and warms an article to which the apparatus is attached. By selecting the land to sea ratio of the mesh, the apparatus delivers a predetermined amount of electrical energy per unit area. The elements can be mounted on a substrate for attachment to the article. Elastomeric polymers are described for use as the elements and the maximum temperature can be set using the positive temperature coefficient properties of these materials. The invention is suitable for use with articles clothing, for example, a jacket, gloves, socks, boots or, upholstery, seat covers, car seats, hospital drapes or other similar application.
