Abstract

A power generating device 4 (1 in fig. 2) is mounted on a pylon 3. The power generating device can be a wind turbine 4 or solar cells (1 in fig. 2). The power generating device supplies power to the national grid.

Description
Pylon Power.
The invention relates to the addition of a power generation device to an electrical pylon, using the existing structure to support a means of adding power to the national grid.
This invention will provide power to top up the national grid as fossil fuels diminish, new technology for power generation will be increasingly important and the addition of a generation device on each pylon will be an important contributor.
This invention could be wind driven, photovoltaic, photoelectric, or any other means of generating power, the generation device could be mounted on the top, sides, down the centre or at any point on the pylon.
Electrical pylons are already in place across the country and tend to be centred near towns and cities where the power is required. By generating power at each pylon the means of distributing the power is at hand and the impact on the environment is mmlmlsec..
A typical example of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1; Shows a typical example of an electricity pylon with a horizontal rotor(4) on top which is generating electricity. The generator is connected to the grid and along with the other pylons in the vicinity it is adding electricity to the grid Figure 2; Shows a typical example of a pylon mounted photovoltaic generating device (1) connected to the grid supplying energy in conditions of high sunlight. The existing pylon (3) would be modified to accept the power-generating device. The insulators (2) are shown in the drawings but the power transition wires between each pylon have been omitted for clarity.
Background to the invention.
With diminishing reserves of fossil fuel the need for cheap renewable energy has seen the rise of "windfarms" across the countryside. It become apparent that a location already existed were thousands of new turbines or various solar devises could be located and is close enough to the national grid to be easily connected and maintained.
With current technology the ability to locate a power generation device on top of an existing pylon is well within the current bounds of technology.
The existing national grid transmits electricity at high voltage around the country and the electricity is then stepped down to a more usable voltage at sub-stations nearer to its intended point of use such as a town or city. By generating large amounts of power at each pylon the amount of energy required from power stations would be reduced, to a point in the future where this and other forms of renewable energy will be the sole source of supply.
By generating electricity at each pylon there would be no need to use such a high voltage to transmit the electricity, future designs of electricity grid could be designed to work at a lower voltage as the "Pylon Power" design will keep the voltage the same across the network. The lower voltage for power distribution could lead to a more efficient network and less concerns regarding risks to health.
Design.
Using this design existing pylons could be modified to incorporate a horizontal wind turbine figure I or photovoltaic plate figure 2, and new pylons could be designed to incorporate a power generation device of either A/C or D/C at any voltage.
Long term the fore-mentioned design could be used to add to the renewable energy quota required by the government to meet the targets recently set on the reduction of C02 emissions.
The use of a horizontal rotor (Fig 1) reduces the need for the device to face into the wind to catch the prevailing wind to turn the blades. It also has the benefit of being considerably shorter than an existing wind turbine and therefore has less impact on the environment. The rotor, mounting device, or associated equipment could be made of steel, plastic, composite or any such material as required to achieve the strength of design with the weight saving required to be supported by existing pylons which would not have been designed to carry this apparatus which initially erected.
