Dividing by fusion. - In a blowpipe machine for cutting metals of the kind in which the blowpipe is guided by a pin orbitally rotated round a templet the guide pin and blowpipe are carried on opposite sides of a single support and are connected by gearing so as to reproduce in the blowpipe rectilinear, circular and other curvilinear movements of the pin or combinations of such movements. An arm 1, which may be traversed on a track 3 through a shaft 36, supports a bracket 9 forming a bearing for two vertical coaxial hollow shafts 11, which carry respectively the horizontal guide member 12 for the pin 18 and the guide member 13 for the blowpipe slide 20. The shafts are connected together by gearing 14, 15 from a shaft 16 which is rotated by worm gear 35, 34 and bevel gear from a hand or power-driven shaft 33. The pin is mounted on a slide 17 which is pressed by one or more springs into contact with the templet 4, corresponding positioning of the slide 20 being effected through racks 24 carried by the slides engaging pinions 25 on a shaft 26. The upper rack may be formed on a rod adjustably fixed to the slide at 28 so as to adjust the relative positions of the pin and blowpipe, adjustable pointers on the slides co-operating with index marks being preferably provided. The bracket 9 may be traversed on the arm 1 by a lead screw 29 and disconnectible half-nut. The blowpipe 23 may be connected to the slide 20 by a swivel joint 22 with which it is coaxial so as to prevent fouling of the gas supply pipes. The slide 17 may move on ball or roller bearings. The blowpipe may operate in a horizontal plane on work situated below it, as shown, or above it, or in an inclined plane, and may be mounted on independent supports such as slides, jointed arms &c., the slide 20 having a pin &c. for engaging the blowpipe coaxially. In using long templets angular setting of the slide may be effected, angular rotation not being required in this case. Specifications 202,686, 202,687, and 202,876 are referred tn.
