Brief Description of the Drawings
The present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the drawings that follow, in which: Figure 1 is a front perspective view of a preferred embodiment of an item of furniture.
Figure 2 is a side cross section of a preferred embodiment S of an item of furniture.
Description of the Preferred Embodiments
As shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2, the preferred embodiment of an item of furniture comprises a bed 10 or bed frame. In an alternative embodiment, the item of furniture may comprise a seat. The bed 10 comprises an engagement member 12 which is arranged to engage with at least one support member 14, 16, 18 and preferably engages three support members 14, 16, 18. The support members 14, 16, 18 are arranged to space a support surface of the bed . from the floor of a vehicle and in particular a vehicle providing accommodation space, for example a caravan, ...
motor home or holiday home. The bed 10 comprises a second a. : engagement member 20 which engages with a lower portion of each support member 14, 16, 18. In addition, the bed 10 .
comprises a third engagement member 22 which engages with an upper rear portion of each support member 14, 16, 18.
Each engagement member 12, 20, 22 is arranged to slidably engage the support members 14, 16, 18. Accordingly, the support members can be located at a selected position along the engagement members 12, 20, 22. The or each engagement member 12, 20, 22 comprises a longitudinal elongate member.
The support members 14, 16, 18 are support legs which also act as partitions. The support members 14, 16, 18 are planar members and are manufactured by injection moulding techniques.
The engagement members 12, 20, 22 are extruded members having a profiled cross section which engages with a respective engagement portion of each support member 14, 16, 18.
The bed 10 provides a storage compartment therein.
The bed 10 has a door 40 or doors 40 to provide access to the storage space. One support member 14 locates at a first end of the bed whilst a second support member 16 locates at a second end of the bed. One of the support members 18 is located between the ends of the bed 10 which thereby divides the storage space in order to provide a . plurality of storage compartments. The doors 40 are .
moveable between an open position and a closed position. ...
In particular, the door(s) 40 are pivotally mounted and I. are arranged to move pivotally downwards to an open position. . :'..
The bed 10 comprises a support surface comprising a plurality of parallel supporting slats 50. The slats 50 are mounted within a frame 52. The frame 52 including the slats 50 is movable between a first position and a second position. The pivotal frame 52 provides further access to the or each storage compartment. The frames 52 are provided with sprung hinges.
The bed 10 provides two separate frames 52 which are individually movable in order to provide separate access to the or each storage compartment.
The support members 14, 16, 18 may be spaced from each other by approximately 1 to 2 metres although greater spacing may be used. In particular, a continuous door or contiguous doors may be provided along the front face to provide increased access to the storage space. The extruded member 12 bears the loads on the support surface so that the whole of the front can be hinged for access.
The engagement member 12 is a load bearing member and transfers any forces to the or each support member 14, 16, 18. In particular, the engagement member 12 is arranged to transfer the forces to the support members 14, 16 located at either end of the bed 10. .'.
The first engagement member 12 or engagement rail 12 comprises a receiving portion which is arranged to receive a shaped portion of the support member 14, 16, 18. In particular, the receiving portion comprises an elongate channel which is arranged to co-operate and engage a flange provided on the support member. The elongate channel may provide a push fit fixing within the flange such that mouth region of the elongate channel is temporarily expanded to enable the flange to locate in the channel and to be retained therein. Alternatively deflection of a mouth region may not be required and the shaped portion may be held with a channel by connection of the respective support member with another engagement member or rail. Once a part of the flange is located in the channel this may only permit relative sliding movement of the support member along the engagement rail. The walls of the channel comprises a resilient material in order to allow the connection of the support member to the engagement rail.
Similarly the third engagement member may also provide a retaining channel in order to retain a shaped portion of the support member. Again, this channel portion may provide a push fit arrangement in order to retain the support member to the engagement rail 22.
The second engagement member 20 provides a shaped surface which in one embodiment may comprise an engagement channel as previously described. Alternatively, the relative positions of each engagement rail 14, 16, 18 may cause the support members 12, 20, 22 to be retained relative to the engagement rails 14, 16, 18. Once a support member 12, 20, 22 is engaged by the engagement rails the support .
member may be slidably moved along the engagement rails in 6 order to locate at a predetermined position. Further A. securement means may then be provided in order to secure A..
the support member at the position along the longitudinal length of the engagement rails. -:-.
The support member 14, 16, 18 comprises two lateral sections, an upper section and a lower section. The four sections are integral and form a continuous loop providing an opening therethrough. The support member 14, 16, 18 thereby provides the strength to the bed and also supports the support surface of the bed.
The item of furniture 10 may be used to create a double bed having a support surface suitable for two people. In this arrangement, the rear engagement member 22 is coupled to the support frames of the second support surface and the double bed is thereby effectively a mirror image about this central engagement member 22.
Accordingly, the bed 10 can be easily and quickly fitted together and does not require the services of a professional cabinet maker. Accordingly, the bed 10 is quick, cheap and easy to manufacture. Furthermore, the support member provides greater strength than beds constructed using individual securement members, for
example screws.
