Abstract

A wall tie comprises two members A and B, each of which can be connected to a wall, and which co-operate to resist compression and tension forces. As shown, each tie portion comprises a triangular head 7 for embedding in masonry, shank 6 and helix 5 which can be screwed into the similar portion of other tie to give an overall length fitted to the required wall spacing. An alternative end of generally S- shape (Fig 3, not shown), is adapted to be fixed to a timber wall. Use of these ties leaves no protruding sharp edges following construction of the first leaf of the wall.

Description

24 1 4026 This invention relates to a wall tie which has an ability to
accommodate different wall leaf separations using the same members.
A wall tie usually consists of one piece of shaped metal that connects two leafs of a wall together.
During construction it is embedded into one leaf of the wall and left protruding towards the intended position of the second leaf. T he part that extends often has sharp edges and is of a fixed length causing the position ofthe wall leafs to be Redefined and different wall ties being needed for different spacing of leafs. Traditional wall ties need to be selected carefully when the construction material changes, on the second leaf, between masonry and timber.
This present invention is a wall tie comprising of two separate members. One member connects to the inner leaf of a wall and the second to the outer leaf, they are joined together with a screw connection that resists contraction and extension. When the wall tie is installed it resists both tension and compression loads.
Installation of this wall tie is progressive with one member embedded in a leaf of a wall protruding towards the intended position of the second leaf. This protruding member has no sharp edges and is joined to the second member using a screw joint and is then embedded into the second leaf. The members can be screwed together to varying extents so that the same wall tie can be used for different wall leaf spacings. As the members can be interchanged to allow connection to timber or masonry, the first member does not need to be altered when the construction material changes on the second leaf thus reducing the risk of errors during construction.
The invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings: Fig 1 is a plan view of member A Fig 2 is a section through the member in fig 1 Fig 3 is a plan view of an alternative member A showing a different end section Fig 4 is a plan view of member B Fig 5 is a section through the member in fig 4 Fig 6 is a plan view of the two members showing interlocking parts A and B Fig 7 is a side view of the two members with the members having different end portions Fig 8 is a plan view of the members in fig 7 Fig 1 shows member A with two sections an end portion 1 and another portion 2. The second section consists of a bar being bent in spiral configuration leading to the end portion 1 which, when attaching to masonry, consists of a metal bar bent into an open triangular formation.
Alternatively an inverted S shape with a hook on the end 3 can be used when attaching to timber.
Fig 3 shows an alternative to the end portion 1, which allows connections to be made to timber.
This option of end portion (3) consists of an small straight section followed by a 180 dep,rce turn, around a radius of that of the bar. It is followed by another small straight section leading to a turn through 1 SO degrees around the same radius finishing off with a final 180 degree turn and leading to the rest of the member.
Fig 4 shows member B with two portions, an end part (7) which is the same as in fig 1 and another part 5. 'l'he portion (5) of the member consists of an elongated bar which is then turned back through 180 degrees at the end and spirals back around the elongated bar towards the end part 4.
Fig 7 shows the position of possible nails in the timber connection they can be positioned at 8 and 9 or 8 and 10.
The member A consists of a helical section followed by a straight section which leads to an end section 1 or 3.
Member B comprises of an elongated section having the end (4) turned through 180 degrees and spiralled around the central section 6. With the end section 7 being either 1 or 3 as described below.
The end section ( I) is an open triangle configuration for connection to masonry. The alternative end section 3 consists of an small straight section followed by a 180 degree turn around a radius of' that bar and then another small straight section leading to a turn through degrees around the same radius finishing off with a final 1 80 degree turn and leading to the rest of the member. 1. A wall tie w ith two members, each with a portion comlccted to a
