Abstract

A multi-purpose platform unit that can form of a control or production fixture for use in the manufacturing industry. A base 2 having a longitudinal axis that is connectable to a permanent part of the control or production fixture. A first universal joint 4 is mounted on the base 2. A second universal joint 8 is pivotally mounted to the first joint 4 about a first pivot axis. A third universal joint 14 has a longitudinal axis and is pivotally mounted to the second joint 8 about a second pivot axis that is at right angles to the first pivot axis. The second and third universal joint 8 and 14 can be selectively locked to the first universal joint 4 and the second universal joint 8, respectively to position the longitudinal axis of the third universal joint 14 at a single or double compound angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the base 2. A support plate 16 can be rotatably mounted on the third universal joint 14 for a device such as a tool, a clamp or a coordinate measuring machine.

TITLE
Multi-purpose platform units
DESCRIPTION
Technical Field
The present invention relates to multi-purpose platform units, and in particular to multi-purpose platform units that can form a part of a control or production fixture for use in the manufacturing industry. The multi-purpose platform units can be used to carry out a variety of different functions such as precision setting, clamping and 1 0 locating.
Summary of the Invention
The present invention provides a multi-purpose platform unit comprising: a base part having a longitudinal axis; a first universal joint part mounted on the base part; a second universal joint part pivotally mounted to the first universal joint part about a first pivot axis; and a third universal joint part having a longitudinal axis and pivotally mounted to the second universal joint part about a second pivot axis, at right angles to the first pivot axis; wherein the second universal joint part can be selectively locked to the first universal joint part and/or the third universal joint part can be selectively locked to the second universal joint part to position the longitudinal axis of the third universal joint part at a single or double compound angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the base part.
The first universal joint part can be mounted on the base part for rotation about its longitudinal axis and can be selectively locked to the base part to prevent further rotation.
A support plate is preferably mounted on the third universal joint part. The support plate can be mounted on the third universal joint part for rotation about its ce. tee c c C C 1 C C c c Ce c c c c c C e c c c c c longitudinal axis and can be selectively locked to the third universal joint part to prevent further rotation. The support part can also include a slot to allow it to slide relative to the third universal joint part. It can be selectively locked to the third universal joint part to prevent further linear movement.
The base part, support plate and the various parts of the universal joint can be made of aluminium or stainless steel.
In use, the base part of the multi-purpose platform unit is secured to a permanent part of the control or production fixture and a control or production device such as a tool, a clamp or a coordinate measuring machine is mounted on or set from the support plate.
The multi-purpose platform unit is then adjusted to place the device in the desired spatial location. The adjustment can include one or more of the following operations: (i) rotating the first universal joint part about the longitudinal axis of the base part, (ii) pivoting the second universal joint part about the first pivot axis relative to the first universal joint part, (iii) pivoting the third universal joint part about the second pivot axis relative to the second universal joint part, (iv) rotating the support plate about the longitudinal axis of the third universal joint part, and (v) sliding the support plate relative to the third universal joint part.
The various parts of the universal joint and the support plate can be selectively locked in position, either permanently or releasably so that the multi-purpose platform unit can be re-adjusted in the future. In particular, all of the parts of the multi-purpose platform unit can be pinned or dowelled off after the adjustment.
The first and second universal joint parts also have a longitudinal axis. It will be readily appreciated that if the multi-purpose platform unit is initially positioned such that the longitudinal axes of the base part and the first, second and third universal joint ë c e e e parts are aligned, and either the second universal joint part is pivoted about the first pivot axis or the third universal joint part is pivoted about the second pivot axis, then the longitudinal axis of the third universal joint part will be positioned at a single angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the base part.
However, if the second joint universal joint part is pivoted about the first pivot axis and the third universal joint part is pivoted about the second pivot axis then the longitudinal axis of the third universal joint part will be positioned at a double compound angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the base part.
Drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a multi-purpose platform unit according to a first embodiment of the present invention having a support plate to which a coordinate measuring machine can be attached to set the inclines of the unit before adjustment; Figure 2 is a cross-section view of the multi-purpose platform unit of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a perspective view of the multi-purpose platform unit of Figure 1 after adjustment; and Figure 4 is a perspective view of a multi-purpose platform unit according to a second embodiment of the present invention having a support plate on which a clamp is mounted.
With reference to Figures 1 and 2, a multi-purpose platform unit includes a rectangular base unit 2 that can be secured to a permanent part of a control or production fixture. The base unit 2 has a longitudinal axis L1. A first universal joint part 4 is rotatably secured to the base part 2 by a bolt 6.
A second universal joint part 8 includes a bifurcated portion 8a that extends towards the base part 2 having a pair of aligned apertures for receiving a shaft 10 that defines a first pivot axis. The second universal joint part 8 also includes a bifurcated portion 8b that extends away from the base part 2 having a pair of aligned apertures for receiving a shaft 12 that defines a second pivot axis such that the first and second pivot axes are at right angles to each other.

A third universal joint part 14 has a longitudinal axis L2 and is pivotally mounted on the shaft 12 between the bifurcated portion 8b of the second universal joint part 8. A support plate 16 is rotatably secured to the third universal joint part 14 by a bolt 18.
The support plate 16 includes a pin 20 so that the multi-platform unit can be set from an attachment of a coordinate measuring machine.
With reference to Figure 3, the multi-purpose platform unit can be adjusted to position the pin 20 at a predetermined spatial location. More particularly, the second universal joint part 8 can be pivoted about the shaft 10 and the third universal joint part 14 can be pivoted about the shaft 12 such that the longitudinal axis L2 of the third universal joint part is positioned at a double compound angle with respect to the longitudinal axis L1 of the base part 2 as shown in Figure 3. Apertures 22 are provided so that the second and third universal joint parts 8 and 14 can be pinned in position after the multi-purpose unit has been adjusted. The first universal joint part 4 and the support plate 16 can also be pinned in position using apertures 24 to prevent further rotation.
Figure 4 shows an alternative multi-purpose platform unit. Some of the features are the same as those shown in Figures 1 to 3 and the same reference numerals have been used. The multi-purpose platform unit includes a circular base unit 30 that can be secured to a permanent part of a control or production fixture. A first universal joint part 32 is rotatably secured to the base part 30 by a bolt (not shown) and includes a bifurcated portion having a pair of aligned apertures for receiving a shaft 10 that defines a first pivot axis.
A second universal joint part 34 is pivotally mounted on the shaft 10 between the bifurcated portion of the first universal joint part 32.

The second universal joint part 34 is pivotally mounted on the shaft 10 between the bifurcated portion of the third universal joint part 36.
A support plate 38 is rotatably secured to the third universal joint part 36 by a bolt 40.
The support plate 38 includes an integral clamp 42.
