Abstract

A method to prevent the collapse of part of the island of La Palma, which could result in a tsunami, involves spreading a net of plastic sulphur and cyanoamacrylate over part of the island thus strengthening said part of the island and also retarding the velocity of any collapse into the sea. An underground lake in the island may also be drained to reduce pressure within the island.

Description

Description
La Palma is part of the Canary Islands Archipelago and is one of the Westernmost of that group. Between that island and the heavily developed East Coast of the United States of America lies uninterrupted ocean.
The island contains an active volcano and an inact- I've volcano. The active volcano is about to erupt at any time. Meanwhile, rain is seeping through the soil and volcanic ash so that a very large under- ground lake is building up inside the active volcano.
Now, the Western face, being made almost entirely of volcanic ash is a lot more fragile than the other faces of the volcano. This means that when the vol- cano erupts or when the water-pressure of the lake builds up sufficiently, a formidable land-slide will send much of the entire Western face of the volcano crashing into the sea.
This will send shock-waves across the Atlantic ocean so that less than sixteen hours later, a mega-tsunami will be formed at the Eastern shores of the USA.
Whole cities will be completely wiped out.
This can be prevented by draining the underground lake by means of tunnels and channels going to the south and to the east. The fertility of the island would also be improved.
Also, spreading a net made of plastic sulphur and cyanoamacrylate over the crumbling Western face would strengthen this shere drop but make it flexible so that the impact of any land-slide into the ocean would be greatly softened so that the shock-waves would not be significant enough to form a-tsunami. Thus, the Eastern Seaboard of the USA

Claims (3)

  1. Claims 1) The East Coast of the USA would be saved from a mega-tsunami.
  2. 2) The island of La Palma would be even more fert- ile than it is.
  3. 3) The method of claim 2, whereby said draining acts to improve the fertility of the island.
    3) The island of La Palma would be a little safer.
    4) The idea of a net made of plastic sulphur and adhesive being used as a strong but flexible grid to prevent or minimise the land-sliding of the Western face of La Palma's active volcano is novel.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1) A method of lessening the impact of a collapse of a face of La Palma Island involving spreading a plastic sulphur cyanomacrylate net over the said face to reduce the chance of forming a mega-tsunami.
    2) The method of claim 1, further compris- ing draining an underground lake in the island by means of tunnels and channels.
