Pneumatic springs; fluid-friction vibration-dampers.-A telescopic strut for aircraft of the kind comprising cylinder and piston elements adapted during telescoping to compress air within the cylinder and also to encounter obstruction provided by liquid flowing through a restricted orifice comprises, in combination, mutually rigid coaxial air and liquid cylinders separated by a fixed perforated partition, a piston connected to a piston-rod which passes through the perforated piston and serves to vary the effective area of the orifice, and sealing means upon both the piston and the liquid cylinder so arranged as, at all times, to be submerged in the liquid. In the form shown in the Figure, the piston d is provided with a pistonrod the extension e of which is tapered and passes through a perforated partition c dividing the cylinder into two parts a, b. The piston-rod is provided with a guide piston f. On telescoping of the parts, the orifice in the partition c is gradually reduced, thus causing increasing resistance to the flow of liquid, and the air in the cylindrical part a is compressed. A short spring n is provided to absorb some of the shock in the event of total or partial loss of air pressure. In a modification, the guide piston f is omitted and replaced by an enlarged head on the extension e which thus forms a ram, and the extension e instead of being tapered is provided with tapered grooves or flats to vary the effective area of the orifice.
