Abstract
A cable stop apparatus comprising a body 1 in the form of an elongate barrel 1 having a slot 8 running the entire length of the barrel 1, a conical chamber 7 at rear of said barrel 1, a number of clamps 3 to be arranged conically within said chamber 7 for gripping a cable 6, and an end cap 2 having a slot 8, the stop apparatus working such that compressing the end cap 2 against the body 1 would cause the cable 6 to be gripped by the clamps 3. The number of clamps 3 is preferably 2, while the compression is preferably caused by tightening of screws, nuts 5 and bolts 4, ties or the like. More preferably, the end cap 2 has shaped recesses wherein the heads of bolts 4 can be secured therein so that the only the nuts 5 have to be tightened to lock the stop in place.
Description
A CABLE STOP
This invention relates to a stop that can be attached to a cable.
Although the following description refers exclusively to a stop device to be used in conjunction with cable apparatus used in the aviation industry, it will be appreciated by persons that the present invention can be used on any cables for similar purposes Conventionally, in order to prevent crewmen or equipment from falling out the back of aircraft or other exits and also used as a means to assist in the dispatch of equipment there currently exists in the market place a cable line that is normally strewn across the length of the carriage section of the aircraft and secured at either end to the body of the aircraft. Situated at a position along the cable line is a stop mechanism that is clamped to the cable. There are different types of stop in the market place typically they are made from two mating blocks of metal that are securely clamped around the cable by being bolted together or alternatively a type of U bolt clamp arrangement that consists of a U bolt and clamping plate that is secured in place by bolts. Both these conventional methods are problematic in that they are time consuming to fit and dismantle and slippage of the stop on the cable is possible and the U bolt system can cause kinks in the cable and reduces cable life.
It is therefore an objective of the present invention to provide a stop apparatus that can be fitted and dismantled easily without unwanted damage to the cable and also to reduce the likelihood of movement of the stop on the cable thus improving flight safety.
According to the present invention there is provided a mechanical cable stop apparatus consisting of a body in the form of an elongated barrel having a slot running from the centre line of the barrel from the front end to the rear end of the barrel allowing it to fit loosely onto a cable the rear end of the barrel provides a conical chamber to fit two conical shaped clamps that grip the cable securely when the end cap is secured in place by compressing the end cap against the barrel by the tightening of screws, nuts and bolts, ties / or the like and thus forcing the two conical shaped clamps to compress against the conical chamber and thus forcing the clamps together to clamp around the cable and lock the stop in place. It will be appreciated by persons that more than two conical shaped clamps could be used. The end cap is also fitted with a slot running from the centre line to allow it to fit loosely over the cable. As well as being locked in position by the use of bolts or similar another advantage of the design of this stop is that unlike conventional stops that are clamped around a cable a specific embodiment that enhances the efficiency of this stop is that any forces acting on the end cap of the stop by way of design of the stop will further tighten the conical clamps against the cable and thus make a tighter clamp arrangement in locking the stop in place and reducing the likelihood of movement of the stop Another advantage of this stop is that because of the increased grip that can be achieved due to the design of the stop it eliminates the need for large quantities of bolts that would be used to tighten the clamp and thus making the stop easier and quicker to assemble and disassemble.
Another advantage of the stop is that by way of its design it enhances the clamping area on the cable and thus eliminates the likelihood of significant damage to the cable that can happen to conventional stops when over tightening occurs A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by the way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective the stop in position on the cable Figure 2 shows a side view of the stop in position on the cable Figure 3 shows a view looking in direction of arrow A on Fig 2 Figure 4 shows a sectional exploded view of the stop looking in direction of arrows B on Fig 3 Figure 5 shows a section view of the stop looking in direction of arrows B on Fig 3 Figure 6 shows an end view of item 3 Referring to the drawing, Figure 5 shows a cable stop apparatus consisting of a body in the form of an elongated barrel I having a slot 8 running from the centre line of the barrel from the front end to the rear end of the barrel allowing it to fit loosely onto a cable 6 the rear end of the barrel provides a conical chamber 7 to fit two conical shaped clamps 3 that grip the cable securely when the end cap 2 is secured in place by compressing the end cap 2 against the barrel I by the tightening of screws, nuts and bolts, ties / or the like 4,5 and thus forcing the two conical shaped clamps 3 to compress against the conical chamber 7 and thus forcing the damps together to clamp around the cable 6 and lock the stop in place. The end cap is also fitted with a slot 8 running from the centre line to allow it to fit loosely over the cable
Claims (1)
- I A cable stop apparatus consisting of a body in the form of an elongated barrel having a slot running from the centre line of the barrel from the front end to the rear end of the barrel allowing it to fit loosely onto a cable, the rear end of the barrel provides a conical chamber to fit a number of conical shaped clamps ideally a number of two that grip the cable securely when the end cap is secured in place by compressing the end cap against the barrel by the tightening of screws, nuts and bolts, ties / or the like and thus forcing the two conical shaped clamps to compress against the conical chamber and thus forcing the clamps together to clamp around the cable and lock the stop in place, the end cap is also fitted with a slot running from the centre line to allow it to fit loosely over the cable 2 A cable stop as claimed in Claim 1 where in the end cap bolts or fixing heads fit into a shaped recess of the end cap allowing the recess to secure the fixing head in place while tightening the nuts or similar to lock the stop in place.
