Abstract
A light bulb of any wattage or design with an additional inbuilt light source 2, so that if the main light source 1 fails to illuminate there will be a visual indication as to whether the main light source 1 in the said bulb has blown or whether there is a power supply to the bulb or not, by means of the additional light source 2 being visible if only the main light source 1 has failed or not visible if there is no power supply to the bulb. The additional light source 2 could be an LED 2 or a filament, and can be constantly illuminated if there is power to the bulb, or made to only illuminate should the main light 1 source fail. The additional light source 2 could also be of an appropriate strength to act as a form of emergency lighting.
Description
SAFETY LIGHT BULB
This invention relates to any light bulb of any wattage or type of fitting.
Light bulbs have been an every day item for many years now and they all eventually blow.
One problem then, is that the person who wants to change a blown bulb does not necessarily know whether the electric to the bulb is still on. This is potentially dangerous and a daunting task for many people especially with lamps, lights with more than one switching points such as the landing and pull cord switched lights. The shock of a bulb illuminating as it is fitted is a very dangerous one as is the temperature the bulb glass becomes, especially when fitting a screw in bulb that takes longer. Because of these concerns, a huge percentage of the population do not like changing bulbs and many simply will not change them.
Another problem with conventional light bulbs is that if a switch is turned on and the bulb does not illuminate, one assumes the bulb has blown and this is the first item to change. In certain circumstances this can take considerable time and it might not be a problem with the bulb at all.
The main object of this invention is to allow a blown bulb to visually indicate whether power to the blown bulb is on or off allowing the worry free changing of the bulb.
A secondary objective is to save the time associated with changing bulbs that are only presumed blown, as if there is no visual indication from the bulb, one can assume there is no power to the bulb. Therefore the problem is elsewhere.
Another objective is to reduce the danger associated with certain situations where a bulb failing would result in total darkness. If the additional light source is of an appropriate strength it will act as a form of emergency lighting.
Accordingly, this invention provides a light bulb of any wattage or design with an additional inbuilt light source or sources, so that if the main light source fails to illuminate there will be a visual indication as to whether the main light source in the said bulb has blown or whether there is a power supply to the bulb or not, by means of the additional light source being visible if only the main light source has failed or not visible if there is no power supply to the bulb.
The additional light source or sources can be incorporated into any bulb capable of the incorporation of any one of the following possibilities.
The additional light source could be a light emitting diode, being highly visible without illuminating any real area, of low wattage and being long lasting. It could also be a filament, perhaps of very low wattage and having a longer lifespan than the main light source. Equally, the additional light source or sources could be of any known source of illumination of any brightness and of any colour.
Another option could be to have, incorporated in the bulb, electrical and or electronic circuitry that will only allow current to flow through the additional light source if the main light source fails.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE 1 shows a cross section of the light bulb showing how the L.E.D. is positioned.
As shown in figure 1, a light bulb of known construction has an element for its main illumination 1, and an inbuilt light emitting diode 2. The diode being or being made suitably heat resistant.
The light emitting diode is positioned near the neck of the bulb and the connecting points 3 are at the same point as the connections from the main element. There is also a resistor 4 of suitable resistance and made suitably heat resistant to reduce voltage to the L.E.D.
The light emitting diode will be illuminated at the same time as the main element, but without being noticed.
When the main element has blown and the power to the bulb is on, the light emitting diode will still be illuminated.
The result is a glow bright enough to be seen but not so as it illuminates any surrounding area.
Claims (6)
1 A light bulb of any wattage or design with an additional inbuilt light source or sources, so that if the main light source fails to illuminate there will be a visual indication as to whether the main light source in the said bulb has blown or whether there is a power supply to the bulb or not, by means of the additional light source being visible if only the main light source has failed or not visible if there is no power supply to the bulb.
2 A light bulb as in claim 1 where the additional light source or sources is/are constantly illuminated if the power supply to the bulb is on.
3 A bulb as in claim 1 where the additional light source or sources is/are only illuminated if the main light source fails.
4 A light bulb as in claims 1,2 or 3 where the additional light source/s can be of any desired brightness and of any colour.
A light bulb as in any previous claims where the additional light source/s is/are of an appropriate strength to act as a form of emergency lighting.
6 A light bulb substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
